Kurt and Courtney

  • In early June, Australian singer/songwriter Courtney Barnett and American singer/songwriter Kurt Vile announced that they would be teaming up for a collaborative tour featuring an “all-star band” called The Sea Lice which is a revolving cast of musicians that includes Janet Weiss (Sleater-Kinney, Wild Flag), Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), Rob Laakso (The Violators, The Swirlies, Mice Parade), and Katie Harkin (Harkin, Sky Larkin, and touring member of Sleater-Kinney and Wild Beasts). The similarly-laconic artists also have a collaborative album called Lotta Sea Lice, which will be released October 13th via Matador. Today they shared the first single, “Over Everything,” and the Danny Cohen-directed black & white video. Catch Kurt and Courtney (get it?) either at The Moore Theatre Saturday, October 21 or at The Showbox on Sunday, October 22. We’ve also just announced the two will be LIVE on KEXP on Sunday, October 22nd at 1:00 PM PT. [ Under the Radar ].

  • Nashville quartet Bully are releasing their sophomore album Losing via their new label home Sub Pop on October 20. The follow-up to the well-received debut Feels Like has a second single, “Running,” that’s been shared today. It follows up “Feel The Same” and was described by frontwoman Alicia Bognanno as a song “about shamelessly keeping yourself distracted or making up excuses to avoid processing certain emotions.” If you really like planning far in the future, Bully will play Neumos on February 28, 2018. • Canadian post-rock collective Godspeed You! Black Emperor are following up 2015’s Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress with Luciferian Towers which will be released on September 22 via Constellation. They’ve now shared its first single called “Undoing a Luciferian Towers,” a nearly-8 minute robust instrumental track. The band really cleared up the intentions behind the song by saying this about it: “look at that fucking skyline! big lazy money writ in dull marble obelisks! imagine all those buildings much later on, hollowed out and stripped bare of wires and glass, listen- the wind is whistling through all 3,000 of its burning window-holes!” Right. If you happen to be in Montreal, Mexico, or Europe in the next few months you can check them out on their international tour. [ Pitchfork ]

  • Indie-rock’s lead weirdos The Flaming Lips and Mac DeMarco are embarking on a joint tour together next month and yesterday frontman of the Flaming Lips Wayne Coyne announced that the two were working on a split EP. On it, the two acts will cover three of each other’s songs, with the Lips likely tackling DeMarco’s “Chamber Of Reflection” from 2014’s Salad Days, based on the Instagram announcement of Coyne playing the song on the keyboard. The Flaming Lips released Oczy Melody in January and DeMarco put out This Old Dog in May. Their joint tour will, unfortunately, not be making a stop in Seattle. [ Consequence of Sound ]
