Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Morning Show with John Richards, is “Light of Loving ” by Faith Healer, off the album Try ;-), out September 8th on Mint Records.

Faith Healer – Light of Loving (MP3)

The hands of Jessica Jalbert are spinning again. The pop-rock mage of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada has gestured forth a whole new project for Faith Healer. It’s going to be called Try ;-) (winky face included) and our first taste comes in the form of “Light of Loving,” a song that travels from surf to space.

This song wastes no time. It only takes a matter of seconds for us to travel through a phone’s busy signal, and into an eerie organ, jostled by a rising timpani and then finally engulfed in the swell of a surf guitar riff. This sets the tone for the ride; unsettling, hypnotic, mysterious, and fun. It isn’t long thereafter that the rocket launches, and we are propelled through the sparks of passing stars and trials, all while tethered to the stable haunting vocals of Jalbert. There’s something sort of tired and wise in her voice, and it’s really that extra nuance that makes the song unique, though you might hardly even notice due to the song’s pace and volume. Rock out and feel weird in anticipation for Try ;-).

Faith Healer heads out on a North American tour later this month, but no Seattle date yet. In the meantime, keep track via Facebook and Instagram, and check out the video for the album’s title track below.
