No Age – Soft Collar Fad (MP3)

Nearly ten years ago Weirdo Rippers and Nouns made No Age modern punk standard-bearers with their mix of hardcore-punk speed, free-floating ambient beauty and a Hüsker Dü-like emotional yearning that managed to cut through the thick coats of fuzz and aggression.

Randy Randall and Dean Allen Spunt took some time off after 2013's An Object, but with their new single "Soft Collar Fad," they've returned with a jackhammer of a song, smashing together a woozy tidal wave of feedback, unyielding propulsion and a chorus that toggles between vulnerability and defiance: "maybe I've got problems/maybe I don't/but it's not for you to say." Truly, their avant-punk mixture hasn't aged a day.

No Age will release their new album Snares Like A Haircut on Drag City on January 26th. They will play The Vera Project on February 23rd. Until then, revisit their 2013 KEXP in-studio session below.
