Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Sprained Ankles,” a self-released single by Falon Sierra.

Falon Sierra – Sprained Ankles (MP3)

From the first note of “Sprained Ankles,” Seattle songwriter Falon Sierra pushes us right into the deep end. “Jumping off buildings/try and catch me,” she says, giving us a bit of a hint as to how she messed her foot up in the first place.

Over swirling mood-drunk r&b that’s been slowed down to a crawl, Sierra uses the titular injury as a metaphor for a pain that is tripping her up, but not stopping her, using her deep, forceful purr to inform us that “Yes I’m hurting/I’m still running.” With the handful of engulfing songs and eye-catching visuals she’s already released, it’s clear that Sierra won’t be slowing down anytime soon.

You can keep up with Sierra at her Facebook page. She will be playing on Saturday, February 3rd at the Stone Way Cafe, and at Washington Hall on Friday, March 9th as KEXP Presents: Jason McCue Album Release Party. Below, watch the aquatic adventures of Sierra in the clip for “Sprained Ankles.”
