*Tips on Takes: You only really need sunscreen and cash (ATMs have long, long lines). Travel light. Wear comfy shoes!

**I’ve listed the DON’T MISS THIS acts in CAPITOLS. Other acts to see for goodness sake are listed in regular case.

***I’m only going on Saturday, but there are also killer acts on Sun (Including ZERO 7, SPOON, THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS, DENGUE FEVER, COMMON MARKET and KANYE WEST) and Mon (ATMOSPHERE, Breakestra, Nouvelle Vague, BITTERSWEET, Metri, Feist, TRANSMISSIONARY 6, BETTYE LAVETTE and A TRIBE CALLED QUEST) too.

SATURDAY 9/2

12:45-1:45 THE GOSSIP - MAINSTAGE (DANCE-SOUL-PUNK-BLUES BAND FROM PORTLAND. THEIR ALBUM “STANDING IN THE WAY OF CONTROL IS ONE OF THE BEST RECORDS OF 2006)

Standing in the Way of Control - (MP3)

1:45-2:45 Slender Means - Backyard Stage (Pop band from Seattle, very magnetic melodies. A very talented young band that I believe will do great things in the future.)

Slender Means live at KEXP (12/4/05) - (WMA, Real)

2:15-3:30 BLONDIE - MAINSTAGE (HOLY SH** IT’S BLONDIE!!! I’VE NEVER SEEN HER LIVE. SHE WAS THE FIRST WHITE PERSON TO PUT OUT A HIT RAP SONG. HAVE YOU SEEN “VIDEODROME”? IT’S A REALLY, REALLY WEIRD/COOL SCI FI MOVIE AND SHE’S SO COMPELLING IN IT. THIS WOMAN IS SO SEXY IN A “VIVA FEMME” SORT OF WAY, AND IS A PIMP SONGWRITER. I’M SO NOT MISSING THIS.) Check out a few videos.

3:30-4:30 HALOU - BACKYARD (THIS ELECTRONIC-CINEMATIC BAND FROM THE BAY AREA ARE ONE-OF-A-KIND. JOHN IN THE MORNING DESCRIBED THEIR SHOW AS “ONE OF THE BEST LIVE ACTS ON EARTH.I’VE NEVER WALKED AWAY FROM A HALOU SHOW WITH LESS THAN MY JAW DROPPED TO THE FLOOR. TRULY MESMERIZING”. THEIR ALBUM FROM 2006 “WHOLENESS AND SEPARATION” IS ONE OF THE YEAR’S BEST.)

Halou live at KEXP (6/9/06) - (WMA, Real)

3:45-4:45 JAMIE LIDELL - BUMBRELLA (I LIKE THIS REVIEW FROM BLUES AND SOUL “IMAGINE PRINCE PRODUCING OTIS REDDING AT AN EARLY ’90s WAREHOUSE RAVE”. THIS SOUL SINGER RIPS IT UP TO ELECTRONIC BEATS. THE LYRICS ARE KINDA DUMB BUT IF YOU’RE DANCING AND HE’S KICKIN DOWN WITH THE SONGS WHO CARES?!?). Check him out.

5:15-6:30 ROGUE WAVE - BACKYARD (I’M REALLY CURIOUS ABOUT THIS BAND FROM SAN FRANCISCO. THEIR RECORD FROM LAST YEAR “DESCENDED LIKE VULTURES” RANGES FROM A BEATLES-Y KINDA SOUND TO A WARM, FUZZY ROCK THING. I THINK THEY COULD GO EITHER WAY LIVE, BE REALLY INTROSPECTIVE AND EMOTIVE, OR WARM AND FUZZY ROCK ICONS. WE’LL SEE.)

Publish My Love - (MP3)
10:1 - (MP3)

5:30-6:45 NOMO - Bumbrella (If it’s not too far from the Rogue Wave show, I’d like to catch a few songs by this extremely talented and tight Afrobeat band. They’re from Michigan, but their jazz-funk-Afro-beat sound makes like they were trained by Fela himself. Extraordinary, really.)

Nomo live at KEXP (6/3/06) - (WMA, Real)

7:30-8:30 SHARON JONES - BUMBRELLA (!!!!!) (I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. THIS 60 YEAR OLD FIREBALL OF A FUNK/SOUL SINGER COULD METAPHORICALLY BE THE LOVE CHILD OF ARETHA AND JAMES BROWN. SHE KNOWS HOW TO WORK THE AUDIENCE AND IS ONE OF THE TOP 3 ARTISTS I’VE SEEN. EVER. HER BACKING BAND IS THE DAP-KINGS - THE PERFECT FUNK/SOUL MACHINE. HORNS. GOD I LOVE HORNS.)

Sharon Jones live at KEXP (5/18/05) - (WMA, Real)

9:30-10:30 LADY SOVEREIGN - BUMBRELLA (GRIME POP IS A STYLE OF RAPPING WHERE THE SINGER SINGS OVER SAMPLED BEATS FROM A DJ. I’VE SEEN DIZZY RASCAL LIVE - HE ASKED ME OUT - PICTURE ME AS MRS. RASCAL HEH HEH. I’VE ALSO SEEN MIA. THEY ARE BOTH VERY TALENTED, BUT I HAVE TO SAY, 20 YEAR-OLD LADY SOVEREIGN BLOWS THEM BOTH AWAY. SHE IS SINCERE, SASSY AND SOLID. DON’T MISS HER.)

The S.O.V. live at KEXP (6/7/06) - (WMA, Real)

10:30 TAKE YOUR ASS HOME AND GO TO SLEEP. A GOOD DAY OF MUSIC. DONE.

“This Seattle band follows up their two earlier EPs with a promising debut full-length of hazy psych-pop, combining languid tempos with blissed-out guitar lines for a dreamy, slow-burning sound reminiscent of Galaxie 500.” - Don Yates

Wednesednesednessday

Odin.jpg
Odin rules

Who decided that’s how you spell Wednesednesednessday? They were on crack. Well, I doubt they had crack then but whatever the equivalent of crack was, they were on it. Same dude probably decided to toss that “r” in Februrrururuary.

Actually Wednesday is named to honor Odin, or Woden, chief god in Norse mythology. Onsdag in Sweden and Denmark. Somehow I KNEW it was Odin’s fault. That guy sucks. I know I live in Ballard and he rules with an iron fist of destruction and blah blah but seriously Odin, what’s with the “n” in there? As for February, it’s a Latin word signifying the festivals of purification. WhoTF purifies themselves in February? I do mine in May which is named after the goddess Maia, daughter of Atlas and mother of Mercury and man, if you’re going to purify do it with Maia in mind! Seriously mother of Mercury AND man? I know I’ve had my issues with Mercury in the past but really my hate lies with Neptune and of course, you know I have issues with Uranus.

Never gets old. Never. EVER.

Seriously, in my head that’s funny every time. Like when you see animals on commercials that talk and act like humans. Oh man, always funny. Look at the funny animal speaking like us! Oh man, that’s ORIGNAL EVERY TIME THEY DO THAT! Nothing makes me want to buy a product more then seeing a dog in a suit talking about something really wacky. If they use the word “wacky”? Genius.

Or Taco Bell or Time, I get em mixed up. Trying to force catch phrases on the public. GREAT work. “Good to Go” complete with hand signal!!! YES! That will work because we are ALL TOTAL F’ING IDIOTS and will do this hand signal as we consume grade E beef made of a mixture of Cow balls and pig tails. I mean you have to ASK for the Cowball/Pigtail Grade E taco but man, talk about good to go.

Even the SWAT team showed up!

Fire Truck.jpg

I had the craziest morning yesterday….I was having trouble falling asleep Monday night. I went to bed around 1 or 2am and I’m tossing and turning in bed and just about to fall asleep at 3am when all this commotion starts right in front of my house. About five huge fire trucks come blaring up, 3 aid cars, a bunch of police cars and a some sort of suburban type SUV pulls right in front of my house and immediately sets up as some sort of field. There are red lights flashing and megaphones blaring. I’m thinking, what the fuck?! Then, I bolted completely awake and remembered that my neighbor, who I have know a long time and of whom I am very fond, has taken to camping on his front lawn (don’t ask) and I thought that maybe something happened to him. So, I throw on some clothes and run outside in a panic to see if they’re carting him away in an ambulance or hosing him down cuz he caught on fire or some such thing. But, no, he’s just sitting in his sleeping bag right in the middle of all the commotion and spotlights taking it all in. Once I ascertained that he was okay, I pulled up a lawn chair and we tried to figure out what was going on. Suddenly, this huge ominous-looking truck pulls up. In big letters on the side it says HEAVY CLEANUP. That really made us curious. One time, about 5 years ago, someone very sadly shot themselves in the park across the street and the firetrucks came and hosed the blood away. It was eerie. So, we thought for sure there had been a shooting (not a usual occurance in my neighborhood, by the way). Anyway, about 8 guys started suiting up in these heavy duty dry suits and masks and snorkels and fins. We finally heard that a guy had gone swimming and his friends said he never came out. Swimming at 2am on a Monday night (a not particularly warm Monday night)? Methinks alcohol and/or drugs might enter the story about here. We watched them search the water for about 30 min. It was very dramatic. We were sure he must have drowned after all that time. Finally, one of the command central guys gets on the megaphone and announces that the Harbor Patrol found him. We weren’t sure if that meant they found him alive or not so were were on pins and needles. Ends up he was fine and he was just swimming across the lake to China Harbor (not a very safe endeavor during the day and certainly not in the middle of the night.) Anyway, now it’s 4AM and I’m wide awake and I have to get up at 6am. But, the long and the short of it is that I learned John’s secret to the amazing Morning Show… No Sleep! The show kicked ass today!! Boy, did I crash hard last night though!!
