KEXP Suggests - The Lemonheads!

Friday, September 29th, 2006

“Evan Dando recruited the former rhythm section for The Descendents to accompany him on the first Lemonheads album in 10 years, along with some cameos from J. Mascis, Garth Hudson, and Gibby Haynes. Dando pretty much picks up where the Lemonheads left off, with a surprisingly solid outing of punkish pop-rock.” - Don Yates

Thursday, 10/5: Velouria Fall Fashion Show, with performances by Heather Duby and Graig Markel, The Triple Door
The imaginary girls are now divided along neighborhood allegiance lines in Seattle, with two-thirds calling Capitol Hill home, and one-third living in Ballard. Two of the cornerstones of Ballard are Sonic Boom Records and Velouria, located side-by-side right near the junction of Market and Old Ballard Avenue. Any self-respecting music fan in Seattle knows about Sonic Boom, a great local record store with three locations in greater Seattle (two in the imaginary girls’ hoods, and one more in Fremont). Sonic Boom not only supports tons of local bands and has incredible (free) in-store performances, but also has a staff of super cool, incredibly helpful folks working there. No record store snobbery here – the hippest of the hipsters to the most uninformed soccer mom can shop here without any eye-rolling from the musically-wiser.

Likewise, Velouria is a great place for the ladies who want to look good at the shows. The shop features clothing, jewelry, handbags, and various other girlie accoutrements, all made by independent designers (including the owner, Tes De Luna). And best of all, no boutique snobbery. The ladies at Velouria will help you forget you’re not a supermodel, with original fashions that make you feel all-fancy. The Fall fashion show promises to unveil the latest styles, worn by some of our favorite people in Seattle (Jenny George and Jackie, we’re looking at you). The night will also showcase two of Seattle’s finest solo artists, the dazzling Heather Duby and Graig Markel (both who have releases on Sonic Boom Recordings, the offshoot label of the record store). Check out this recording journal for the making of Graig’s new record…

GRAIG MARKEL - RECORDING JOURNAL - recoverysounds

Make sure you dress up, as the Triple Door is one elegant venue, reminiscent of 1930’s speakeasies, and the food – should you choose to dine before the show – is all provided by Wild Ginger, arguably the tastiest pan-Asian cuisine in Seattle.

Thursday, 10/5: Carrie Clark and The Lonesome Lovers, Andrea Wittgens (CD release), Bre Loughlin, Robb Benson and Dept of Energy, Nectar
If you’re feeling like a night of mega-talented local singer songwriters but you’re not feeling like a high-brow night at the Triple Door, Nectar in Fremont has a great lineup of local talent. The night is especially noteworthy as the CD release show for Andrea Wittgens, a new (at least to us) solo artist who sings and plays the piano in the vein of a dreamier Tori Amos. Join the former vocalist for Sugartown as she celebrates her debut release Alibi. Here’s a little video that Robb recorded with his daughter. He wrote the song and recorded the video in one day!

You’ve probably heard us play Joseph Arthur’s new record Nuclear Daydream quite a bit. It’s really impressive and it got me thinking about the last time he performed in-studio. He uses a lot of effects, which gives the music a lot of texture. The new record is a little more stripped down, but equally emotive. I thought I’d share his most recent performance…

KEXP Suggests - Sparklehorse!

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

Check out this video for “It’s A Wonderful Life” by Sparklehorse. It’s from their 2001 album of the same name. After what seems like forever, they have released a new record…

“The 1st album in 5 years from Mark Linkous & co. is a stunning return to form. After highly publicized battles with depression and addiction, Linkous is back with another magical batch of heartbreakingly sad and utterly sublime songs blending folk-pop, psychedelia and experimental electronics. Some special guests contribute, including Danger Mouse, Christian Fennesz, Tom Waits, Dave Fridmann, and the Flaming Lips’ Stephen Drozd, but as always with Sparklehorse, this is Linkous’s show, and it’s one of his best to date.” - Don Yates

Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain is out now. Stream two songs from the record at their MySpace page.

Sparklehorse are currently touring in Europe with many upcoming shows throughout Great Britain and France.

Tonight, The British Blues of the 1960’s!

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

This week in the Roadhouse tune in tonight at 6pm for a special 3-hour program; Before Classic Rock: The British Blues of the 1960s. Hear your favorite classic rock bands in their early incarnations as hip Blues and R&B bands. Lots of rare and obscure stuff from The Stones, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Eric Clapton, Yardbirds, Cream, Animals, Pretty Things and of course John Mayall. Enjoy this early recording of Led Zeppelin performing ‘How Many More Times.’ I believe it’s from a Danish TV special, recorded in March of 1969 shortly after the band changed it’s name from the New Yardbirds to Led Zeppelin. It’s an awesome recording, and man do they rock! The song sounds a lot like ‘How Many More Years’ by Howlin’ Wolf. Hmmm… Go figure.

Thievery Corp at the Moore, remixes

Thievery Corp1.jpg
Thievery Corporation at the Moore - 8/1/06, courtesy of Rebecca

My intern Rebecca and I have been meaning to post some thoughts about a few recent shows. Here is the first of a handful of posts…

Thievery Corporation at the Moore Theater was non-stop dance party and while maintaining their sound from their CD’s, bring a whole different feel live. On stage they are high energy and non-stop fun, led by a talented and large band of performers with musical influences from all over the globe, including brazil, jamaica and the united states. The stage itself ablaze with screens reflecting dancing light patterns, was a nice touch to fuel the sold out show’s audience. They fittingly encored with an on-stage dance party with beautiful women from the audience.

Stream some songs from Versions, the new remix album at their MySpace page, and listen to an exclusive in-studio performance from 5/10/2005 - (WMA, Real).

Tune in to Wo’ Pop, Tuesdays at 6pm for a 3 hour look into Modern Global Music.
