As I sit here listening to What Made Milwaukee Famous play live we’re getting close to the end of day 2… which was another GREAT day. Both Kevin and I rocked the Halloween Theme show. One of the best days to program music at KEXP! Check the archive if you missed it but man, it was fun. Nothing but in-studios and Halloween shows.

2 local bands started the day off, Head Like a Kite and Voyager One. HLAK show up in Superman outfits. I shit you not. They kept talking about them “bunching”. I was scared for my life. They have x-ray vision! Great set, nice moody eletro-rock… really enjoyed it.

Voyager One showed up in rock outfits. All black and badass. I’ve known that band for years and I don’t think they’ve EVER sounded as great as they did today. Man, that set made me happy. Made me proud of our local music scene.

The Apples in Stereo couldn’t make it in, we were sad. They were stuck in Baltimore. The man who is putting them out on his new label stopped by though, Elijah Wood, so we had him debut a bunch of songs and talk with Cheryl. We then hooked up his ipod and he dj’d the rest of the hour. He played some GREAT stuff and was very supportive of what we do at KEXP. He is a true music fan so it was great to have him on.

Day 1 was fantastic

I knew it was going to be a good trip when my first interaction with anyone was on the plane trying to use the bathroom. PLEASE lock the door when you go in there. Unless you’re into people walking in on you. I know I’m not into that. Next was the hotel. It’s actually the size of my car… but my car has a clock and doesn’t smell like an ashtray. I got out of there ASAP when I realized there were burn marks all over my bed.

Then we got the Gigantic Studios and everything got better. Day 1 was fantastic. We got started on our 40 hour, 20 band in-studio marathon with the band Rosewood Thieves. I couldn’t help but be reminded of the pop of The Beach Boys… but updated and original. They were great and set the pace for the week.

Next up was our last minute entry Bound Stems. Man, when you’re able to book a band like this last minute life is good. They had this really intense energy to them. A very urgent and powerful performance yet fun at the same time. The girl in the band kept turning around and smiling and yelling at Cheryl. The room was hot and buzzing with electricity when they finished…

Darc Mind played next. Always great to have the hip hop in and the Darc Mind story is a pretty interesting one… it touches on the business and hip hop parts of music. Cheryl did a great job in the interview. Darc Mind brought it. A very laid back delivery that was totally modern. LOVED It…

Last up, the Virgins. A band that has been together for 3 months. When Cheryl heard the demo, she handed it to me back in Seattle and said “CMJ?” I said “Book it”. I love those bands, taking a chance and having them deliver. They all made us feel old though as these guys had a ton of energy and we’d been at it all day. Really nice fellas, really great sound. By the end of day though, the room smelled like my locker in junior high.

A great day, the people at Gigantic are so sweet and totally supportive of KEXP’s efforts. Can’t wait to see what else the week holds. Check out the pictures from Day 1.

KEXP Suggests Malajube!

Monday, October 30th, 2006

“The 2nd album from this Montreal band is one of the year’s more magical indie-pop albums, combining intricate arrangements and effervescent melodies for dazzling songs of pure pop pleasure that still retain plenty of rock kick. While the band sings in their native French, no translation is necessary when the music’s brilliance shines as brightly as it does here.” - Don Yates

Tricks & Treats: An Imaginary Guide for the Holiday

Friday, October 27th, 2006
Team Gina.jpg

The week surrounding Halloween is usually chock full of reasons to dress up in your scary finest. After all this is the only time of the year where you can throw caution to the wind and live out your wildest dramatic fantasies in the comfort of a public setting. With that, a few recommendations (based on our failures / successes of last year)

1. Don’t want the pressure of planning a gathering and filling your apartment with flammable plastic items purchased last minute at the drug store around the corner? Head to Zero Zero! And put a little adventure in your holiday:

Saturday, 10/28: Happy Hallowoah! Team Gina / DJ Chompers / DJ X / DJ Ruben from the Charming Snakes / DJ Shawn Prince {Zero Zero}
Have you ever left a lame party only to walk by a much cooler one and you have the overwhelming urge to crash it? Last Halloween igChar found herself in that very situation. Luckily the cool kids party is happening again this year and everyone is invited (as long as you’re over 21 and not a jerk). It’s at super rock star salon Zero Zero and features a slew of local DJ’s and Team Gina (think Scream Club meets Anna Oxygen). And it’s free.

2. Keep all those jumbo mixed bags of candy for yourself and carve pumpkins with friends – just make sure you buy your pumpkins ahead of time. Last year igLiz thought that the city stores were so insanely full of pumpkins that there was no way they’d run out anytime before Halloween night. She’d been tripping over them and running her cart over them in the grocery store for weeks, there was surely a man:pumpkin ratio of mammoth proportions in Seattle. Alas, come Halloween night and the night of her pumpkin carving date, there was not a pumpkin for sale between Northgate and Beacon Hill. The horror! Let’s not have a repeat of the first annual carving of a honeydew melon. They just can’t handle having a candle lit inside them for more than 20 minutes.

3. Skip the dress up and hit see a show! How’s your Best of 2006 list coming along so far? While each of us imaginary girls are in varying stages of preparedness (with igLiz making spreadsheet calculations and igChar still pondering her choices), igDana knows at least two of her top ten: Figurines’ Skeletons and Heartless Bastards All This Time. And would you believe these two touring bands (Heartless Bastards are from Ohio, Figurines are from Denmark) are both playing Seattle, only one day apart… and on a Monday and Tuesday night? It’s going to be a very double tall soy latte kind of week.

Heartless Bastards - Blue Day (live) - craybil

Monday, 10/30: Heartless Bastards {The Tractor Tavern}
Heartless Bastards play the Tractor on Monday, October 30th, Halloween eve. Come and hear the haunting the voice of their front-woman Erika Wennerstrom: throaty, soaring, and impossibly powerful without being piercing, full of hope yet tinged with soulfulness in all the right ways.

Tuesday, 10/31: Figurines, The Ark {The Crocodile Cafe}
Figurines top the list of staggeringly great Scandinavian bands with releases this year (The Knife, El Perro Del Mar, Dryden). While TIG was one of the first to gush about the Figurines record when it was released earlier this year, we definitely weren’t the last. The album has garnered huge praise from Pitchfork and a slew of others for their hook-laden indie rock perfection. For Halloween, come to the Crocodile and dress as a superfan.And can’t decide what to wear? Let the stars make your decision for you. This month’s AstroPOP column (astrology readings and record reviews in one!) recommends a costume for you based on your birthday. Can’t argue with that!
