Pledge Drive, Day 5. I have the coolest job in the world…

Winter Pledge Drive-Map.jpg
Morning Faithful everywhere stepping up big… Photo by Gregory Perez

I have the coolest, strangest, most crazy job I can imagine in the world. This I realize during the pledge drives. We had a record setting day on Monday, I was totally freaking out. Tuesday we did great, 20k but it seemed like a hard day and the day just got longer for me for a number of reasons. We did great on the Midday Show and Kevin and Jo did awesome…as did Wo Pop….but Arlie had a hard night and on top of that, I just sort of lost my ability to focus and be positive suddenly. Not good during a drive. It’s hard to explain what it does to your brain and your personality when you get on the air asking for people to respond over and over and over again for hours. Totally weird.

But today I got on the mic and as I always do, just talked to the Morning Faithful about where I was and man, I just saw one of the greatest mornings of my life here at KEXP. Not just another massive day, hitting thte 32k mark like Monday but the emails and the outpouring of love and not once did we have to struggle to meet or goals, we just kept hitting them so it never required me to “freak out” on the air…just talk, just be myself, just play music…and really isn’t that what KEXP is all about? Back to pitching, Cheryl just gave and renewed her membership…how cool is that?

  • My second pledge drive. Day 4.

    Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

The weekend was really fun, lots of faces I’d seen last fall and so many people talking about music and their admiration for the DJs they were volunteering to support.

    Winter Pledge Drive-John & Arlie.jpg
John and Arlie, photo courtesy of Gregory Perez

Joe, who loves Stevie Zoom and Kevin Cole, passed around a little sheet of paper and started a “best of” series of lists – CDs folks are listening to right now, favorite live bands, favorite movies… Just think of it, these people are uncommonly knowledgeable and passionate about music, so these lists are an amazing resource. And, we had so much fun doing it!

    Winter Pledge Drive-Volunteers.jpg

During the drive, I get to hang out in this pledge room with some amazing people. They get up before first light, they take the day – and even the week - off from their jobs to be here to help the station meet its goals. So many of them make their own gifts to the station while they’re here, too.

Yes, that’s a bagel and an arm… photo courtesy of Gregory Perez

The pledge room has been decorated festively by our volunteers and we have a unicorn theme going on: disco ball, starlight, streamers, and a unicorn headpiece that only the men will wear for some reason. One volunteer, Dallas, looked so good in the unicorn headpiece that he felt just fine going outside to move his car in the thing.

When you meet the volunteers, you realize that your suspicions have always been right. You COULD be friends with nearly every other KEXP listener in the universe! I so thankful to these dedicated volunteers and to the donors who call and email to make gifts so that the volunteers can feel good about the work they are doing for the station.

  • Pledge Drive: Day 1

    Monday, February 26th, 2007

Actually its day 3, I’ve been up here since Saturday. Well, to be honest with you its day 4, we started on the Rockabilly show on Friday.

    Winter Membeship Drive-Leon Rocks.jpg
    Leon smells like socks

But when it comes to pledge drives, its a blur… I will be on the air 46 hours this drive which I think sets some kind of record. The best part of that record is that with it, comes the loss of one’s sanity AND the ability to share that loss with thousands of people who tune in.

    Winter Membeship Drive-Leon_Mari.jpg
Dr. Leon Berman, Shakin’ the Winter Pledge Drive - 2/23/07

There’s a reason you hear people do radio shows for only 3 or 4 hours, its not recommended to do any more than that. If you don’t know why, just listen to the drive later this week, you’ll see.

Saturday I was on Positive Vibes with Kid Hops. It’s about as chill as you’ll ever hear me on the mic. With all respect to Jah, it’s better I keep it chill. We had a great show raising around 17k and showing why this has always been one of the most popular show on our airwaves through the years. Kid Hops is a fun guy to be on the air with as well, the man uses some of the biggest words I’ve heard on the air since Sean Nelson and half of them actually makes sense to me! All respect to Jah.

Sunday Stevie Zoom was out, he’s on a big bike ride outside of Seattle and needed his show covered so Cheryl and I did the show and got a little warm up on Sunday for the drive. It was weird to be on the air on a Sunday but nice to roll in at 11am instead of my usual 4:30AM arrival time. We had a sweet time busting new music and raising a record setting Sunday afternoon of about 11k. All respect to Tour de Stevie.

    Winter Membership Drive-Its A Blur.jpg
    It’s a blur

Today I’m on my 5th Americano and 12th cookie. I’m going to be in trouble come later this week when my heart stops from the 15 extra pounds of weight and the caffeine that destroys me. But it’s for the greater good of KEXP and our pledge drive. The first of the year! We raised a record setting Monday Morning amount of nearly 32k!!!! Best Monday in history. My wife and son came in to answer phones as well. Well Tiffany did, Arlie ran around like a bat out of hell. In fact I brought him in at 4:30 in the morning to hang out and pull music. He grabbed Pulp and John Spencer, smart kid.

    Winter Membership Drive-Donuts.jpg

Cheryl and I just talked about Pho and creampuffs on the air and we had a killer break once again proving you guys rule and don’t expect us to make any sense when we do these drives as the music is already speaking for us!

  • A few of our favorite (imaginary) things (this week)…

    Friday, February 23rd, 2007

These are a few of our favorite (imaginary) things (this week)

    1. The idea that Blur might play again!
Rumor or not, the hope of a Blur reunion really makes our week. There’s a distinct difference in the caliber of Blur releases when comparing pre-and post-Graham Coxon departure. The battle of Blur’s Think Tank (Blur’s first album after Graham left the band, released in 2002) versus Graham Coxon’s The Sky is Too High (his fourth solo album, released in 2002) alone results in a no-brainer: Think Tank = snoozer, The Sky is Too High = rocking concussion of American-styled indie-rock in line with the best elements that Malkmus ever delivered. But we’re not all about Graham all the time… we want all the original line-up of Blur all the time. If those four lads join forces again there’s a remote possibility that the something along the genius lines of Modern Life is Rubbish. Even if it takes Dr. Phil, we want Damon, Graham, Alex, and Dave back together.

    2. SXSW Hootenanny’s!
Our dream of a Three Imaginary Girls SXSW party is firmed up! There are a ton of details that include, but not limited to, the fact that there will be a *very* festive setting and the six band line-up includes bands from Seattle (Tullycraft, BOAT), Sweden (The Faintest Ideas), UK (Manhattan Love Suicides), and Australia (The Zebras). We even hear the party next door is giving away free sneakers. Yes, free Saucony’s. We’ve already started counting down on SXSW 2007 advent-style calendar.

    3. Hutch Harris!
Did anyone else go to the Thermals show on Wednesday night (2/21)? We know there were a bunch of you there because that place was sold-out packed. We’re still woozy from that killer hour+ long set chock full of all of our favorite Thermals songs and of all that Hutch Harris and Kathy Foster magic. Want to relive that magic night? Us too! Want more? Us too!

    thermalskaleyphoto.jpg

    4. Hot Toddies! We have nothing but love for both the drink and the band. This Friday night, you’d better believe the imaginary girls will hit the Comet Tavern to catch this four-piece bevy of beautiful SF ladies for their first Seattle show. Any girls who rhyme “skedaddle” with “Seattle” and “straddle” get highest marks in our book, and the Hot Toddies bring a special naiveté and lo-fi pop goodness to their naughtiest of Northwest tourism songs. Not sure what we’re talking about? Check their MySpace and listen to “Seattle” to hear what all the fuss is about.

    5. Amy Winehouse! Speaking of hot girls with potty mouths, holy cripes that new Amy Winehouse record Back to Black is incredible – no small adjective coming from imaginary girls who don’t listen to R&B like, ever. Those Brits are so far ahead of our game, even their tabloid trashy, non-rehab going celebs are brilliantly talented. The CD won’t be available in the US for a couple more weeks, so for now you’ll have to get your fill from Amy’s MySpace page.

    6. KEXP! We love KEXP – and supporting KEXP is an essential part of our love affair with the station. Liz gets giddy each time she thinks about the boombox she sponsored in Kevin Cole’s office. She hopes to one day call the vinyl library her adopted kin. This season’s fund raising drive is starting this weekend and Three Imaginary Girls is pleased as punch to be on the volunteer shift during one of our favorite radio shows — Larry’s Lounge – which runs from 3pm to 6pm on Sunday. Join in the fun and give us a call to make your donation. There’s little finer that a Sunday afternoon with that post-donation-glow feeling.
