Rock the vote!

Friday, March 30th, 2007

With SXSW a little over a week past, we’re back up and running from the four-day nonstop fest of gaiety, mingling, and music. The way we look at it, SXSW was just training for Bumbershoot. It was boot camp for sharpening our Bumbershoot survival skills: Planning (who to see when without suffering overlaps of high priorities on the to-see list), standing in one place stamina (remember that line to see Spoon last year?), and resilience against fried foods (elephant ears, how can any human resist?).

Amy Winehouse Back to Black - Jamsie567

And how better to prepare than to take our discoveries and VOTE! Bumbershoot is now taking votes to help gage who they should bring to the festival. You can read all about who we loved and hated in the first half of our SXSW recap. igLiz is emphatically voting that Northern State (who have just finished up recording an album with Ad Rock!!!) be invited to Seattle. Of course, we can’t stop talking about the Fratellis, Matt & Kim and the Trucks, so they should have a slot. igDana, well, she’d love to stalk Amy Winehouse in her own city. igDana knows the side streets and hotel lobby layouts of Seattle so well, she and Amy would certainly serendipitously be “running into each other” many times over B-shoot weekend.

The Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger Full Vid - xGr1Ng0x

We love voting — and when it is for a cause like Bumbershoot and it might result in some of our favorite bands coming to our fair city, we are ecstatic. Bumbershoot has closed the window accepting applications… so this is our last change to ROCK the BumberVote.

And for those bands amongst us that want to take the bulls by the horns and get in on the Capitol Hill Block Party line-up, the CHBP folks are accepting applications. We’re not sure what applying entails since there’s a fee to apply… but we’re sure it’s well worth it. We believe in you! Go get ‘em tiger!

Speaking of shows and being ecstatic, we’d like to wish everyone’s favorite pal and all around cool cat, Pete Greenberg a very happy birthday! You can join in the birthday fun at a show put together to celebrate this Wednesday, April 4th at the Crocodile. Pete’s pulled together some of his favorite Seattle talent for an “Elvis Costello Cover Night” with Ghost Stories, Young Sportsmen, Central Services, The Hope, Suicide Jack, High Page Delay, Cantona, Sly Lothario, and more!

C’mon, rock the VOTE,

  • Three of my favorite new releases

    Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

Guitar sounds often define a band, and three of my favorite new releases that we received this past week are from bands that revamped their guitar sound to one degree or another.

The one on top is surprisingly the one whose guitar sound changed the least, considering the change in personnel. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank is the remarkable new album from Modest Mouse. Yes, the band now includes former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, but while Marr’s light, atmospheric chime adds a sweet touch to a few new Modest Mouse songs, overall he seamlessly blends into his new band’s more ramshackle sound, dishing out a number of jagged riffs that would’ve fit right in on earlier Mouse albums.

    Modest Mouse - Dashboard - NapoleonD12

There’s no question when listening to the new album that Modest Mouse is still Isaac Brock’s band. The production is a bit bigger this time, the hooks often brighter, but the songs are as solid a batch as he’s ever delivered, often indulging in nautical themes to express Isaac’s fatalism and frustration with the way things are. Many of the songs come off as deranged sea chanteys, with Isaac barking, ranting or even sweetly crooning. Sure, he’s technically a limited vocalist, but no one else could make his songs signify as well as he does, though Marr does occasionally add some nice frosting on the cake.

Chicago band the Ponys also reworked their guitar sound for their 3rd album Turn the Lights Out. While they’ve always experimented with guitar sounds, they do so with even more gusto this time around. The songs are their most expansive to date, and they’re fleshed out with a variety of atmospheric guitar tones and effects that often bring a prominent Sonic Youth influence to their noisy jangle, and those guitars are brought more to the forefront thanks to the album’s bolder production.

The Ponys: "Double Vision" (Live at Schubas, Chicago) - gascon26

The most dramatic change in guitar sound comes from Nick Cave. Nick’s new Grinderman project is a slimmed-down version of his long-time band the Bad Seeds. Nick plays lead guitar for the first time, and his primitive, noisy leads combined with some vicious electric bouzouki and violin from Warren Ellis set fire to some of the most brutal recordings Cave has made since he was in the Birthday Party. His raw guitar squall evokes the Stooges’ Ron Asheton more than anyone else, and Grinderman’s self-titled debut album sounds at times like the best Stooges album of the year (sadly, the less said about the actual Stooges’ new album, the better).

Still, it’s not all raw power and unhinged cacophony – Nick also contributes some dark, unsettling ballads to the proceedings. And while at the album’s heart is primitive, bluesy rock ‘n’ roll laced with menace and seething lust, Cave also understands there’s something just a little bit absurd about being a demonic middle-aged rock beast, so he throws in some self-deprecating humor that brings a welcome self-awareness to it all. While not for the faint of heart, Grinderman is an often fascinating, highly entertaining thrill ride.

One quick footnote: Cave also has another noteworthy new release out. It’s a 2-CD/2-DVD set featuring concert recordings from Cave and the Bad Seeds’ 2002-2204 European tour surrounding the release of his excellent previous album, the 2-CD set Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus. Most of the songs are from that album, but some older Cave favorites are also included. The sound is wonderful for a live recording, and many of the performances are well worth hearing and watching.

Music That Matters Vol. 42: My SXSW Flashback Hour…The Early Years, The Twilight Sad, Foals, Hot Club De Paris, iLiKETRAiNS and many more

    Monday, March 26th, 2007

Nothing compares to Austin. 6th Street, Stubb’s BBQ, South Congress, Austin Hotel, Spider House Coffee, endless music. Even the airport reminds you it’s the “Music Capital of the World.” I visit once a year and it’s for all of the above. SXSW coincides with Spring Break and St. Patrick’s Day. A belated Mardi Gras of sorts but fewer sparkly beads and less nudity.KEXP broadcasted live from Austin City Limits for 3 days (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3) and it was very difficult to leave for day parties.

It’s a pretty sweet life when your main troubles are worrying about making it in time to see Mew’s outdoor show after hanging with Iggy backstage. Well, he was hangin’, I was watching. And is 4x enough times to see Mew in a week? No, never.

    Iggy-SXSW-Shannon.jpg
Iggy Pop, courtesy of Doron Gild

I go to SXSW to discover new bands and see them for the first time, especially if they’ve never played in the States before. But always take the time to see my current (loyal) faves like Mew (again) and Peter, Bjorn & John (finally).

    Mew-SXSW-Shannon.jpg
With Mew, courtesy of Doron Gild
    Peter Bjorn & John-SXSW-Shannon.jpg

Weeding through a thousand or so bands is difficult. I have my own criteria and put my feelers out there to see who are the buzz bands. This podcast features only 15 of them. (I’ll have more of them on my next one.)

I love The Early Years and couldn’t wait to finally see them live. I’ve included the live at KEXP version of their song, “So Far Gone” as the first track on this podcast. Very appropriate as they kicked off our live broadcast for SXSW.

    The Early Years-SXSW-Shannon.jpg

My absolute favorite new live band at SXSW is Foals. I describe them as The Rapture meets Cold War Kids. What energy! Get ready to dance. Hot Club De Paris played immediately afterwards and I couldn’t believe I saw two really fantastic bands in a row. Bands need a way to stand out from amongst 1000 others and they both did so well I didn’t think anyone could follow. I was wrong.

I caught The Twilight Sad at Mohawk on my first night and later in the week when they played a Scottish showcase. I already knew I wanted “And She Would Darken the Memory” on the podcast since I would wake up in the morning singing it, humming it, thinking it. I can’t wait to hear their LP. Be sure to catch them on tour with Aerogramme. You won’t be disappointed.

Girl bands. Not really girl bands but bands with girls. One band name that’s quite deceiving is The Victorian English Gentlemens Club, which features a girl drummer, girl bass player and a male lead singer. Then we have the Pipettes, who I saw at Filter’s courtyard party with Mew, Mando Diao and the Fratellis. The Pipettes have a few guys in sweater vests with monogrammed initials. Three cute girls lead them in sassy pop songs and wear matching ultra-feminine polka dot clothing. So so sweet! And the crowd was mesmerized.

Music That Matters 42: My SXSW Flashback Hour (MP3)

    1. The Early Years – So Far Gone (Live @ KEXP in Austin) (their album is on Beggars Banquet)
    2. Foals – Hummer (Transgressive)
    3. Hot Club De Paris – Sometimesitsbetternottostickbitsof
    eachotherineachotherforeachother (Moshi Moshi)
    4. The Holloways – Dancefloor (TVT)
    5. Mohair – Stranded (in the Middle of Nowhere) (Grunion)
    6. The Pipettes – Your Kisses are Wasted on Me (Memphis Industries)
    7. The Victorian English Gentlemens Club – Ban the Gin (Fantastic Plastic)
    8. Stoney – Jailbird (Red Alert)
    9. The Twilight Sad – And She Would Darken the Memory (Fat Cat)
    10. The Cinematics – Break (TVT)
    11. Frightened Rabbit – Be Less Rude (Hits the Fan)
    12. The Faintest Ideas – Dexter’s Got a Sinister Heart (Magic Marker)
    13. The Kissaway Trail – 61 (Bella Union, Etch n Sketch Records and Playground)
    14. Sissy Wish – Do What They Say (Sissy Music)
    15. iLiKETRAiNS – Terra Nova (Beggars Banquet)

Please send major praise/minor criticisms or vice versa my way: shannon@kexp.org.
