A “nice cup of tea” to celebrate the new Radiohead album!

Okay, there was some recent music news of importance recently — Phil Spektor released upon public temporarily, George Michael struggles with pot dependency, and Madonna and Beastie Boys nominated for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but this weekend came the biggest story to break in a long time as far as the blogosphere was concerned: Radiohead will release its next album in ten days! Apparently, the code of hieroglyphs on Dead Air Space was a ruse, and the countdown hoax just a diversionary tactic. Yesterday, details of the new album, previously called LP7 and now officially called In Rainbows, have actually been revealed.
According to the band’s official website, you can acquire the new album as a digital download available as soon as October 10. Your options for purchase are, get this, a self-determined price for a digital download or £40.00 (that’s over $80 for us yanks) for a “discbox” containing twice as many songs as the digital album and presented on both CD and vinyl. That means, you can choose to pay either next to nothing or more than you’ve probably ever paid for a new album! Also, considering the discboxes will be “made to order,” it appears that the band hasn’t yet secured a satisfactory deal with another major label and has chosen instead to go DIY. For a band that sold over 300,000 copies in the first week of its last album’s release, this is going to be an interesting experiment. For those able to hold out until next year, the album will come out as a standard release in 2008, so tells a band spokesperson to Billboard (via Tiny Mix Tapes), on a yet to be determined label. October 10 is indeed a big day for moody Anglophilic music fans, as it’s also the U.S. release date of Anton Corbijn’s Control, the biopic of Ian Curtis and Joy Division. For the many fans eagerly awaiting, The Tripwire recommends the Control podcast, free from iTunes. The ten minute video features interviews with the director (Corbijn), the writer (Matt Greenalgh), and the executive producer (Korda Marshall), interspersed with clips from the film and soundtrack.
