Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is Amigo
by Funky C from the 2007 album Joya on Sonic360.
Cristian Sol Moraga FarÃas, aka Funky C, began his musical career at the ripe age of 14. His father, Hugo Moraga, one of Chile’s most treasured musicians exposed him to an eclectic mix of sounds coaxing Cristian into his future ventures. At 16, Funky C formed funk heavyweights Los Tetas, a group that made huge waves in a pool of largely punk bands, all in reaction to the Pinochet regime. Following Los Tetas’ break up in 2004, Funky C contemplated walking away from music only to have more and more music materialize, resulting in Joya, his debut solo album. Joya blends funk, hip-hop and soul through a combination of programmed beats and live instrumentation. This album will make listeners nostalgic for old Michael Jackson and James Brown records as they race to the nearest dance floor. Tour-wise, it looks like Funky C is sticking with his home turf for the time being, but if you’re in Santiago, you have plenty of opportunities to check him out. For updates, go to out his MySpace page for some great remixes and don’t miss this glitzy video for Joya
