Every Friday, we deliver a different song from a local performer as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Morning Show host John Richards, is Alex Boom Selector
by Velella Velella from the 2007 Flight Cub EP on Hush.
Velella Velella is a quartet out of Seattle that aims to please with guitar, bass, and a plethora of keys, organs and synthesizers. Drawing from people like Madlib and Beck, VV dishes out electro-funk with spunk. It’s oftentimes quite subtle, though the occasional dancefloor single is well within their means. Listening to VV, I can’t help being reminded of Hot Chip’s first effort, Coming on Strong, of course without the silly bullying lyrics. This band actually uses vocals very seldom, instead letting solid grooves do all the talking. The band recently finished a short tour to promote their new EP, but currently have no shows scheduled. Keep checking their MySpace page as that is sure to change.
