New music videos these days are looking more and more “DIY.” Maybe it’s because the music video format itself is no longer the only loss leader for record labels (sorry, CD’s, but your profitability is dwindling), and now they’re forced to cut their budgets a bit more — or maybe it’s just a result of the “you can do it” trend of soliciting fan-made art, videos, and even music. Either way, the DIY-look is happenin’.
In this selection of very recent videos, it’s all about simple settings (a warehouse, a studio, a sidewalk), non-professional actors (the band, their friends), and cheap effects (stock footage, retro local access FX). But there’s a benefit to all this frugality — a return to creativity. Enjoy:
Vampire Weekend - A-Punk
Moby - Alice
Iron and Wine - Boy With a Coin
The Blakes - Don’t Bother Me
Xiu Xiu - I Do What I Want, When I Want
Eddie Vedder - Guaranteed

I’m not a big Xiu Xiu fan, but that video is awesome. So is The Blakes’ video (go local)!
The Vampire Weekend video is pretty hilarious if not a little boring. Yeah I also enjoy The Blakes video.
