Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Midday Show host Cheryl Waters, is Water Makes the Blade Blunt
by Kaputt, to be released as a single on Too Pure later this year.
The London quartet Kaputt has befriended important local media outlets over the past year, setting the stage for a great 2008. Silke Steidinger, a former drummer for ranting sprawlers The Go! Team, sits more focused at the head of this project. While Kaputt is primarily a punk band, elements of 80s new wave and krautrock are ever present. Their songs typically burst out of the gate with driving guitar/bass lines and oft-repeated lyrics, leaving their appreciation for American sonic gurus like Sonic Youth out in the open. And while Steidinger has all the bite of SY’s Kim Gordon, her more endearing moments will lure you in ’til the bitter and raucous end. Without abandoning their influences, Kaputt has jumpstarted a collection of songs as applicable to the die-hard Interpol fan as to the dancefloor junkie. Londeners, enjoy ‘em while you got ‘em. Visit the band’s MySpace page for a selection of studio and live tracks after freaking out to this video for Family Tree
