On air this week, you’ll hear the DJ’s featuring bands on the Sub Pop label and especially those performing during this weekend’s 20th Anniversary Festival at Marymoor Park from noon to 10pm on July 12th and 13th. On the KEXP Blog, we’ll be featuring one or two bands each day and giving away tickets to SP20! Today, we’re featuring Red Red Meat:

review by Chris Estey
I never really listened closely to Red Red Meat till I fell in love with rock critic-performance artist Camden Joy’s “Hubcap Diamondstar Halo.” That small press masterpiece was a fictionalized account of RRM leader Tim Rutili crashing the Sub Pop van and the piss-soaked madness that floated around Chicago’s visionary frontman and his band. At that point, I absorbed all of the grit-slathered Chicago punk blues band’s five releases, three of them put out by the legendary Seattle label, before Tim founded Califone with four other members of RRM. Begun in 1990 as a shambolic folk act called Friends of Betty, their S-P debut Jimmywine Majestic features such intoxicated, belligerent brawlers as “Stained and Lit” and their mini-hit “Flank.” Red Red Meat was doomed by struggles even before founding member and bassist Glynis Johnson was let go from the group and very shortly thereafter died of AIDS (the band was unaware of how sick she really was). That sort of raw tragedy is the shame and rage that fuels the band’s records, which tell a story about the downer period of the 90s that has often been forgotten by the concept of grunge as a pop phenomenon.
KEXP and Zune are giving you an opportunity to attend SubPop 20. All you have to do is be one of the first people to answer a trivia question and write “SP20″ in the subject line, along with the day you want to go, either “Saturday” or “Sunday”. The first 4 people to respond (2 for each day) will get one pair of tickets for that day. The tickets must be picked up at the station by Friday afternoon. All this week, we’ll be giving away tickets to SP20 on the KEXP Blog, so stay tuned! Here’s your question:
If you think you know the answer, email now!
Sorry, tickets for today are all gone.
Saturday at SP20 is sold out, but you can still get tickets for Sunday if you check now! Also, we’re still giving away tickets to the Comedy Show on Friday. It’s a tough question and only a few people got it so far, but there two more pairs(!) available.
