“Damn, I love hearing these old guys show the new bands how it’s done!” — overheard at SP20
That was a sentiment frequently shared by those who witnessed the many seminal Sub Pop bands that reformed in celebration of SP20, the two-day festival at Marymoor Park. Groups that had been either disbanded or out of commission for years, or even decades — Red Red Meat, Green River, Les Thugs, The Vaselines — proved they had not lost a step nor become hopelessly outdated. More than that, they showed maturity beyond their raw power, something often lacking with the young ‘uns. (Compare Tim Rutili’s acceptance of the unintentional clacking of his guitar and deciding to just “play with it” during RRM’s set to Foals’ Yannis Philippakis’ destructive tantrum at his own malperforming instrument.) Without a doubt, the highlights of the festival belonged to the old guys.
Just before the festival, one group of old guys, who sounded better and more confident than ever, The Fluid, stopped by the KEXP studios for a blazing in-studio session with Cheryl Waters. Check out why this Denver band was first non-local group signed by the legendary Seattle label:
