Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is Undignified by New Radiant Storm King from the 2008 album Drinking In The Moonlight on Darla.

Peyton Pinkerton (guitar/vocals) and Matt Hunter (guitar/vocals) started New Radiant Storm King back in 1989 while attending school at Hampshire College. Nearly twenty years later, now a solid 4-piece band, NRSK still maintains a solid, adoring cult following. Drinking In The Moonlight, their 9th studio album, was recorded over a six month period with their favored engineer, Mark Alan Miller (J. Mascis & The Fog). The album features plenty of the band’s signature sound, a combination of often intense noise pop and lyrical sensibilities more akin to alt-rock and college radio. But the Northampton group’s new record also features some acoustic, melody- and hook-driven tracks like the beautiful Anything Can Happen and New Paltz Waltz, a picturesque instrumental tune. Together with the rhythm section of Caleb Wetmore (bass) and J.J. O’Connell (drums), Pinkerton and Hunter have concocted a bevy of tunes that are perfect for a summer drive through the country or a windy day in the city. Each track is certainly steeped in the here and now, but the band has never lost its ’90s roots. You can get your hands on the new album October 7th.
