Hi everybody! I have to admit to being a little distracted and excited this week, as I’m sure many of you are as well. I won’t say much in preamble on this week’s Review Revue, just that Slint’s Spiderland is an absolute masterpiece, one of those genre and era-defining albums that has influenced a whole slew of incredible music in the almost-twenty years (!) since its release. I saw Slint a couple years ago on their reunion tour, and the live show was absolutely mind-blowing, putting the album even more in perspective. If you’re not familiar with Slint, remedy that asap!
| “H it is! I love you all. 1 of my favorite releases of 1991. Record co. of the year? Touch & Go!”
“Pretty good.” “Scratchy! Wish we had CD… [ah yes, because CDs don't scratch!]” “Now that it’s back in rotation and all the way to H, in fact, I can say that it’s a little slow for me. Oh well…” “Damn Good Record!” “2.1 ‘Washer’ is the shit!” “This LP was abused. It skips. [frowny face] Please treat vinyl with respect!” “I dig this quite a bit. Reminds me of Bitch Magnet or H.P. Zinker in terms of their sense of dynamics. Ranges from really quiet to really loud in some of the same songs. [Yes, this used to be noteworthy and unusual. I swear.] Cool.” “Provocative! ‘Good Morning Captain.’” “I like this more than most stuff in H. P.S. Tension is the key word!” “Cool! Maybe in for H if you ask me.” “‘Good Morning Capt.’ is great.” “This music is about tension. The guitars set a tone of pent-up hostility. The drums are ominous + forboding. Yet, this band rarely builds to the cathartic explosion the music promises. They let loose on a few songs, but there is a sense of incompletion about this album. It could have been great, but we’ll have to settle for pretty good. Features ex-Squirrel Bait guys.” |

Absolutely mind-blowing. My greatest discovery in music this year (where I come from, Scotland, albums like this aren’t as well known - my friends listen to Kylie, woopti-fucking-doo(!))
