Don’t let the sinking economy during this holiday season get you down. You just need to think smaller this year. There’s no need to buy the 9-disc Abba box set or yet another Johnny Cash collection (no matter how great the man is). Wouldn’t your music-loving friends (and you yourself) much prefer a couple under-$20 DVDs from Seattle favorites The Long Winters and French electro-savants Justice?
The Long Winters - Live at the Showbox (Barsuk)
Justice - A Cross The Universe (Atlantic)
While you’re out there, be sure to pick up a few other frugal gifts as featured on Largehearted Boy’s list of new releases. Fans of indie rock covers have two excellent collections to choose from: the thrifty-minded should check out Cat Power’s Dark End of the Street EP (Matador), collecting covers from the Jukebox sessions earlier this year, and The Finally LP (Caldo Verde) from former Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon man Mark Kozelek, who performs songs by Low, Hüsker Dü, and one of his ongoing favorites, AC/DC. Other releases worth checking out come from Fire on Fire, DM Stith, and The Welcome Wagon.
