Ever since being rescued from obscurity following the 2005 release of Transistor Radio, Portland’s M. Ward has been everywhere. His recently released solo album, Hold Time, might not overtake the popularity of last year’s She & Him project with Zooey Deschanel, but it should serve as an unforgettable reminder of the man’s great talents. On his previous solo effort, Post-War, Ward showed there was a sunnier side to his songwriting lurking beneath the surface. That side was then explored at great lengths on the S&H album. Now Ward is exhibiting his ability to move fluidly between the sunny and the sullen. Whether utilizing a simple acoustic guitar melody, silky backing strings or a full band accompaniment, his production skills churn out one gem after another, all authentically spanning genres and time. Catch him this Friday at the Showbox at the Market or in May when he returns to play Sasquatch. Also, listen for him on KEXP’s SXSW broadcast this year. (You heard it here first!)
