Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show host Kevin Cole, is Nikorette
by Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band from the 2009 album Outer South on Merge Records.
Building on last year’s self-titled album, Conor Oberst is back with another full-length record, this time co-written by the members of the Mystic Valley Band. After touring extensively on the S/T release, Oberst and company moved the recording operation from Tepozlan, Mexico, to the vicinity of El Paso, Texas. Anyone who has lost track of Oberst following his detour from Bright Eyes can catch up by watching the free documentary One of My Kind. The 60-minute film begins with the band’s time in Mexico and goes all the way through the recording of Outer South. Also, there are some brief but good profiles on each member of the Mystic Valley Band over on Oberst’s MySpace page. East Coasters are going to want to pay attention to the band’s July dates as many of them are opening slots on Wilco’s upcoming tour. Below is the trailer for One of My Kind, for those of you who don’t feel like jumping right in:

I absolutely love most of the music featured on the song of the day. Sadly, the lyrics to this one made me hit the delete button before I got to the chorus.
