Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Morning Show host John Richards, is “You Push, I’ll Go” by Baby Dayliner from a 2009 demo on Brassland.
Ethan Marunas (aka Baby Dayliner) is a one man wrecking crew. An amazing vocalist, songwriter, producer, and DJ, Baby Dayliner performs both with and without a backing band, often times depending on just a laptop and his microphone. And that seems enough. His clean cut look makes you think he could be fronting the next Joy Division, until you hear his music and discover there’s something a lot different about this guy. Born and raised in New York City, Marunas went to school at the acclaimed Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts (known from the 1980 film Fame) and his early musical influences were actually classical. At his core, Baby Dayliner is a wordsmith and talented vocalist. This guy knows how to croon with the best of them. He also knows how to deliver incredibly catchy pop songs. It’s a little bit R&B, a little bit pop, but probably one of those things you either love or hate. If you had to describe it to someone, you could call it Sinatra lounge inspired, Casio keyboard, Morrissey karaoke. In other words, absolutely fantastic.
You can listen to additional tracks on his MySpace page or find out more about him at his website (which for the moment is currently down).
And our New York listeners can catch Baby Dayliner as the guest DJ on this week’s episode of our local music show To The Five Boroughs! To The Five Boroughs is hosted by John Richards, and airs every Thursday night at 8:00 pm EST on Radio New York, 91.5 FM.
No matter where you are, you can watch this video for “The Way You Look Tonight,” from Baby Dayliner’s previous album Critics Pass Away:

Ah, tracked down. John you are the main reason I keep my membership up with KEXP. So much great music! Thanks.
i heard this song and was haunted for hours… until i finally figured it out!
i’m fairly certain that the beat is ripped from the last 40ish seconds of key stroke by her space holiday (circa 2001- manic expressive). its sped up a little though and looped.
i tried to research this and confirm that it’s sampled from hsh but with no luck… and no signs that ANYONE else has noticed. perhaps this is another ice ice baby? i hope someone tells marc bianchi!
