Out This Week 7/28

The height of summer sees the lowest number of hot releases, proven by the lack of familiar names among the new albums out this week, but that shouldn’t stop you from checking out some new music that you might otherwise miss, like the debut from Timber Timbre, a one-man project from Toronto’s Taylor Kirk. Don’t let the slow tempo fool you; you’ll quickly find yourself swaying to the cool, dark, groovy folk melodies. Simultaneously eerie and soothing, Timber Timbre recalls Tindersticks and Dream City Film Club, a rustic (David) Lynchian cinema of sound (in fact, Lynch’s own music project, the 50’s inspired Fox Bat Strategy, sounds quite similar) grown right from Taylor Kirk’s bedroom. So break open a copy of Cormac McCarthy’s Outer Dark or slip Mulholland Drive into the DVD player, turn down the lights and up the music, and let Timber Timbre overtake you as you sit there, feet kicked up, sweating through your t-shirt, waiting for night’s relief from the heat.

As for the rest, you’d do well to check out the new releases from Band of Skulls, who were just at the Capitol Hill Block Party, Howling Bells, Brian Glaze (formerly of The Brian Jonestown Massacre), Kevin Hearn, and DFA duo YACHT.
