My Current Obsession is Under Byen, “Samme Stof Som Stof”

As a regular listener to the afternoon show, you know I’ve been playing lots of Scandinavian and Nordic bands lately. Not sure what’s going on up/over there, but damn, there’s lots of great new music coming out of that part of the world recently, like Sigur Ros, Mugison, and Emiliana Torrini out of Iceland; Love Is All, David & the Citizens, Radio LXMBRG, and Nicolai Dunger from Sweden, Mi and L’au from Finland (and France); Norway’s Serena-Maneesh; and from Denmark, the Figurines and my current obsession Under Byen.

Under Byen create a sound unlike any other band…sure, you’ll notice a little Bjork in the vocal, and a little Sigur Ros in the musical moods and glacial time shifts, but like much of the best music, Under Byen defies classification and comparison. Violin and cello melt into synthesizers colliding with metallic percussion. Bells, chimes, and otherworldly saw take you to new highs only to be grounded by raw feedback and noise. Sweet and comforting, then metallic and brutal. Beautiful and distinctive. Words fail, so enough with them, listen for yourself:

Every once in a while a song comes along that drives me completely mental. I play it over and over again, like a rat in a B. F. Skinner box. Something about the song is linked directly to my brain’s pleasure center.

The Little One’s “Lovers Who Uncover” is one of those songs. Insanely catchy, everything about this song is fantastic; multiple irresistible hooks grab you by the ears and won’t let go while subtle touches bury the hooks even deeper. At 1:32 into the song there’s a breakdown complete with handclaps and chants that’s so sugary it seems unfair. I’m pretty sure the other songs on the Sing Song EP are damn good too, I just can’t get “Lovers Who Uncover” out of my head long enough to listen! BTW, did you know B.F. Skinner’s first name was Burrhus?

What are your current obsessions?

“Lovers Who Uncover” is the lead track on our current KEXP Music That Matter’s podcast.

Have a listen to a few songs from the Sing Song EP and let me know what you think…
