A big day for independent Minneapolis-based Afternoon Records, who are putting out three physical releases this week, two of which KEXP has already podcast! Sissy Wish, We All Have Hooks for Hands, and We Shot the Moon hit stores today.

Other worthwhile releases include David Rawlings, frequent songwriting partner of Gillian Welch, with his own Dave Rawlings Machine, a debut with fantastic covers from this bluegrass veteran. LA rock supergroup Them Crooked Vultures — Dave Grohl, Josh Homme & John Paul Jones — blast into stores, while Norah Jones softly drifts in with her fourth album.

And it wouldn’t be the pre-holiday season without an abundance of reissues and box sets. Some unlikely characters get the remaster treatment: Blood Brothers, Alejandro Escovedo, David Bowie, The Fall -- all great stocking or turkey stuffers! — while the mega-box sets weigh down with 11-disc Atlantic Records: The Time Capsule and the 6-disc The Doors: Live in New York.

Merge complete their SCORE! 20 Years of Merge Records series with The Remixes!, featuring reworking of Merge bands, past and present, by Four Tet, John McEntire, Mark Robinson and others, with proceeds to benefit the label (natch!). You call yourself a Pixies fan? Bought tickets to their reunited Doolittle tour, yeah? For multiple shows even? Well, you’re not a real Pixies fan until you’ve plunked down two hundred and something bucks on the Minotaur box set, collecting 5 remastered CDs of their studio albums, also contained on 6 Blu-ray and 6 DVDs in 5.1 surround, plus a 54 page book set, all packaged by Vaughan Oliver, the designer of all of the Pixies album artwork. Come on, pilgrim — show your love.

Under the shadow of that monster, the rest of the week’s releases are fairly low key… but certainly not to be ignored. British brat rockers The Cribs let loose their fourth studio album, while Snow Patrol continues on their path with Up to Now, their sixth, and a new band fronted by a seasoned veteran, Bad Lieutenant, with New Order’s Bernard Sumner, releases in CD form their debut. Local (and former local) acts Big Spider’s Back, Loch Lomond, and deVries have new ones out today, as do Ola Podrida and Pants Yell!. Iceland rings in with two new releases, both quite different but equally excellent (what else would you expect?): the ambient experimental By the Throat by Ben Frost from the Bedroom Community, and Ólafur Arnalds’s Found Songs, which collects 7 songs of chamber strings and piano recorded in as many days, out on Erased Tapes — both well worth checking out!

And now that Halloween has come and gone, well… ’tis the season. Box sets, mostly less ambitious than Minotaur, and holiday albums begin to proliferate on the shelves. This week, AC/DC weighs in with a 2 CD/DVD box, and of course you’ll find the requisite Billy Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald collections. Tori Amos has recorded an album of Christmas classics along with a few originals, called Midwinter Graces, and if you’ve ever wondered what “Waterloo Sunset” sounds like in choral version, Ray Davies has put The Kinks to the 65-piece Crouch End Festival Chorus for The Kinks Choral Collection. Maybe a little less in the holiday spirit but certainly to make great gifts nonetheless: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Robyn Hitchcock have new live DVDs for fans. So prepare to gather ’round the Festivus Pole, but not before you create your list from Largehearted Boy and enjoy these kind gifts courtesy of the bands and their labels:

Happy Election Day, everybody! Though we may not be electing the big guns (so to speak) today, it’s important to remember that often the most work gets done at a local level, so get out there, cast your vote and effect change!

In the spirit of free choice, we collect samples from each week’s new releases for you to make informed decisions as you head out to your local record shop. This week, The Strokes vocalist Julian Casablancas breaks from his party with his solo debut, Phrazes for the Young (better make sure to vote for more school funding, particularly in regard to language arts and spelling!). Norwegians Kings of Convenience may appear to be learning the American way with Declaration of Dependence, but their stripped down, breezy sound is a relaxing moment of freedom in your otherwise productive day. Young New Zealand rockers Bang Bang Eche exercise free speech with their FCC-violating new EP, while if there’s any right Canadian garage rockers King Khan & BBQ Show are fighting for, it’s definitely for the right to party on their new album, Invisible Girl.

There are plenty of other candidates eager for your support this week, and unlike in most elections, it’s far more than a two party system: check out the latest from The Mary Onettes, Lymbyc Systym, Vitalic, Gift of Gab, Jookabox, Holopaw, and a brand new single from Yeasayer, who vying for world domination with their sophomore release. For those content to sit on the porch in the moonlight with a jug of whiskey (those are true ‘merican values!), there’s the debut from indie veterans Jason Molina and Will Johnson (a.k.a. Molina and Johnson), who practically define American indie songwriting with their folky self-titled collaboration. Musical duo The Swell Season, comprised of Frames frontman Glen Hansard and Czech pianist and singer Markéta Irglová, return with a followup to their multi-award winning soundtrack to Once. The pair just performed an exclusive live set for KEXP listeners last Thursday (you can still catch in on our Streaming Archive) but will be back again with a full band in November. Devendra Banhart also tops the list of new releases this week with his major label debut, What Will Be, and another musical duo, Tegan and Sara, are sure to land in KEXP listeners’ shopping carts. Heavy Trash, a projected co-helmed by Jon Spencer, not only have a new release this week but were live on air this morning (another reason to head over to our Streaming Archive). The Northwest represents with Portland’s Pink Martini and Seattle’s BOAT and Levi Fuller. Also recommended are the latest from Chuck Prophet, Fela Kuti, Bassnectar, and Echo & The Bunnymen, who just keep cranking out albums. This being the week of CMJ Music Festival, it’s not surprising that many of these artists whose albums are being released this week are also playing in NYC. In fact, two of them will be featured live on KEXP this week: Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson on Wednesday at 9AM and Alec Ounsworth (of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah) on Friday at 7AM.

Also among the releases that should top KEXP listeners’ “must buy” lists is the latest from Maps, whose previous, debut release was nominated for a Mercury Prize in 2007. Seattle represents this week with bands The Tripwires, U.S.E , and current Seattle resident Spiral Stairs (Pavement) all making a showing, as do Seattle labels Sub Pop and The Control Group with great new releases by Flight of the Conchords and El Perro Del Mar respectively. Of the Brits, be sure to check out the buzz-worthy Florence and the Machine and the latest from The Rakes. Fans who were excited to hear the new songs during The Flaming Lips‘ spectacle of a live show this summer can now hear the official versions as their latest, Embryonic, hits stores in a deluxe edition this week, including a fur box set! (Why didn’t Blitzen Trapper think of that?):

Springing forth also this week are new progeny from KEXP favorites like Grant-Lee Phillips, Forro in the Dark, Thao with the Get Down Stay Down, We All Have Hooks for Hands, The Heavy, and the long-awaited and excellent sophomore release from Engineers. Are you as excited to see Spike Jonze’s adaptation of Where The Wild Things Are as I am? The movie stills look absolutely gorgeous and the songs composed by Karen O seem as wild and fun as I hope the entire project will be. For the soundtrack, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman enlisted “The Kids,” composed of an untrained children’s choir along with many of her friends: Bradford Cox (Deerhunter), Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age, The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs), Aaron Hemphill (Liars), Greg Kurstin (The Bird and the Bee), Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs, The Greenhornes), Imaad Wasif (New Folk Implosion, Alaska), Nick Zinner, (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and more!

Among our guests during KEXP’s broadcast from Musicfest NW this year was the Scottish group The Twilight Sad, who performed several songs from their brand album, Forget the Night Ahead, in their live set at the Doug Fir (watch video here). New York band The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, who also performed live that day during our broadcast, have an new EP of their own out today. Beyond that, it’s a smorgasbord of delectable albums you’ll hear on KEXP, including The Big Pink, Le Loup, Islands, Girls, Sea Wolf, Brother Ali, Vic Chesnutt, WHY?, Joshua James, and the first independently released album by Pearl Jam… and there’s plenty more!

There are also a few projects whose names might be less recognizable but whose members you’ll certainly know — Volcano Choir (Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon), Rain Machine (TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone), and Monsters of Folk (a supergroup of M. Seattle represent! This week’s roundup is filled with some hot new releases from the Northwest. Visqueen’s latest, Message from Garcia, which was available digitally last week, is now ready for purchase for those of you out there still buying physical CD’s. Grand Archives and Black Whales, who are both in studio live on KEXP today, have new albums out also, as do The Maldives and Grand Hallway. Plus, Sunny Day Real Estate, one of the Seattle bands to hit the big time, are rereleasing their first two albums, Diary and LP2, on Sub Pop.
