Most musicians out there have a hard enough time getting their music out to the world, that once it’s there you’d think they would want to make the experience as straightforward as possible. You know, band name, album name, track listing; the whole deal. Many artists, though, seem to thrive on making the whole process a challenge — from the music itself to the album title (how many self-titled albums does Peter Gabriel have again?), to the song titles (Sigur Ros, I’m lookin’ at you). Gordon Sharp’s Cindytalk, known for creating difficult music, released 1988’s In This World as two full-length LPs with the same title, with several different covers. I imagine this led to some really interesting/confusing conversations among people talking about the album (”Man, it’s so intense and noisy!” “What do you mean, it’s totally quiet and boring!!”). Here at the station, it led to one of the albums being taped to the back of the other, with a big note on the front. Not exactly elegant, but it seems to have cleared up any confusion.

“PLEASE NOTE: SECOND HALF OF ‘IN THIS WORLD’ IS TAPED TO THE BACK!”

“Some fairly grinding noise and a good pounding beat. Maybe someplace between Swans + Scratch Acid w/lots of feedback.”

“1-1 is quiet and nice. A few calm moments amidst the din.”

“H me please & then play me relentlessly.”

“ROCKS DANG GOOD.”

“Very overrated.”

“The quiet alb’s a real snoozer, but the loud alb ROCKS!!! Vocals are scary & fuzzy in a real cool way. Also, neat tribal-type rhythms kinda like Sav. Republic.”

“This is devastating & chilling, like Crispy Ambulance. Put it in H.”

“H please. A very ambitious record reflecting KCMU musical directions.”

“Well, what they could be…”

“Gosh, sure is noisy in here! I didn’t like this at first, but I can see why you all like it so. Not sure if I like it that much after listening more. Like Big Black meets Coil. H is good for variety, but this could get overripe too fast.”

“This is starting to suck wind.”
