  • Frequently played KEXP band, Cymbals Eat Guitars, just switched out their bassist for a new guy named Matthew Whipple. The last guy, Neil Berenholz, according to Pitchfork according to CEG’s publicist, left the band amicably because “he didn’t like touring.” Well, that’s probably good because they’re doing a heck of a lot of it lately. But he left before getting to open for the Flaming Lips, which they’ll be doing in London next month.
    • Ted Leo has a new song. And he played it at CMJ for the internets. It’s called “One Polaroid A Day” and I embedded it below:

    • So, I guess, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys will be performing at Yankee Stadium for the second game of the World Series tonight. Whatever. Go Phillies!
    • Like covers? I do. And I often discover them through awesome cover blogs like CopyCats and session blogs like Daytrotter. It was from the latter that I discovered a new cover by Magnolia Electric Co. Get going and check out their version of Warren Zevon’s “Lawyers, Guns and Money.”
    • Speaking of covers! Remember that Dark Was the Night compilation that came out earlier this year? It’s raised a respectable $668,358 for the Red Hot Organization, and consequently AIDS awareness, so far.
    • Tegan and Sara put out a new record Tuesday. They also released a video for it’s first single: “Hell.” Check it:

    swell season

    Musical duo The Swell Season, comprised of Frames frontman Glen Hansard and Czech pianist and singer Markéta Irglová, return with a followup to their multi-award winning soundtrack to Once. The pair just performed an exclusive live set for KEXP listeners last Thursday (you can still catch in on our Streaming Archive) but will be back again with a full band in November. Devendra Banhart also tops the list of new releases this week with his major label debut, What Will Be, and another musical duo, Tegan and Sara, are sure to land in KEXP listeners’ shopping carts. Heavy Trash, a projected co-helmed by Jon Spencer, not only have a new release this week but were live on air this morning (another reason to head over to our Streaming Archive). The Northwest represents with Portland’s Pink Martini and Seattle’s BOAT and Levi Fuller. Also recommended are the latest from Chuck Prophet, Fela Kuti, Bassnectar, and Echo & The Bunnymen, who just keep cranking out albums. And Wolfmother are back… with a new lineup but all the same rock! Check out more on Largehearted Boy’s list, but not before you sample this week’s goods:
