Decibel Festival 2012: dB Finale @ Neumos

Finishing up Decibel Festival, the Finale was a powerful and well-rounded night of music at Neumos. The turnout was far better than anyone could have expected for a Sunday evening after five days of nonstop partying. Some artists who had entertained earlier in the week came by for the closing ceremonies, including Seattle’s own Lusine.Read more...

If there was ever a way to see to the beginning of the end of Decibel Festival, it was at OPTICAL 5: Undercurrent at the Triple Door on Sunday night. Not only was a worn-out but happy audience treated to the ambient wanderings of Loscil, composer Christina Vantzou, and the prolific Windy & Carl, butRead more...

Decibel Festival 2012: Shpongle Presents: The Masquerade @ Neptune Theatre

My second evening at Decibel Festival began at the Neptune Theatre with the intriguing-sounding Shpongle Presents: The Masquerade. I wasn’t familiar with Shpongle‘s work, but the showcase description mentioned a blend of traditional acoustic instruments with “computer wizardry”, and more importantly “an elaborate, 3D video-mapped stage configuration”. Last year I had been fortunate to seeRead more...

Decibel Festival 2012: Dropping Gems with DJAO, Natasha Kmeto, Devon Who, & Balam Acab

Dropping Gems showcase did exactly what its name suggests: gem after gem of songs were dropped by all four of the artists of the night, from remixes of Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” during Natasha Kmeto‘s set to glistening images of rippling water behind the inescapable rattling bass of Balam Acab‘s. If you don’tRead more...

Decibel Festival 2012: Ghostly International Showcase

Ghostly International are no strangers to Decibel Festival. In fact, the imprint has had a showcase at Decibel every year since its founding in 2003. Without a doubt, this year’s edition was nothing to pass up. With visuals supplied by Scott Sunn and diverse sets by Seattle electronica artist Lusine, instrumental art rock band Tycho,Read more...

Decibel Festival 2012: Jet Jam Presents, featuring Shlohmo, Baths, and Star Slinger at Neumos

The Jet Jam Showcase may have been the biggest party at Decibel Festival this year. Between three very different acts, the crowd got three very different sets, but one thing stayed consistent throughout: they were all ridiculously fun. A DJ set by Shlohmo got the night started off right, with a bland of his ownRead more...

Decibel Festival 2012: Beat Prodigies showcase @ Barboza & dB in Dub showcase @ Neumos

Ever since I first attended Decibel Festival in 2009, one of my favorite things about the festival has been the opportunity to bounce between different clubs during the evenings, sampling a variety of artists and styles. As Decibel Festival has grown and expanded across Seattle, that’s become increasingly difficult to do. This year, my bestRead more...

Decibel Festival 2012: Optical 2 with Anenon, Julianna Barwick, & Maria Minerva @Triple Door

Decibel’s Optical series were among some of the most spectacular shows at the festival - they often featured the more ambient or simply less danceable music. As Christina Vantzou, who did the visuals for Julianna Barwick during this performance and performed on Sunday, saidb “these will get you into that quiet place.” The Optical 2:Read more...

Decibel Festival 2012: Ariel Pink and Friends @ Crocodile

Ariel Pink, Dam-Funk and BODYGUARD and may have been the most brilliant booking of the weekend. The three acts couldn’t be more different. BODYGUARD blends dark electronic with traditional African instruments. Dam-Funk mixes funk, soul, and (as we saw ) punk into a whirlwind of sultry sound. And Ariel Pink? Well... he’s Ariel Pink. ButRead more...
