KEXP: Feelin’ Minnesota Day

Back in 2016, listeners across the country competed in KEXP’s first-ever State-to-State challenge, similar to our Hood-to-Hood challenge, where the city who made the most gifts during our fundraising drive was crowned the winner. And last year, the winner was: Minnesota.

This Wednesday, June 7th, on what would have been Prince’s 59th birthday, KEXP will be Feelin’ Minnesota as we celebrate with a spotlight on bands from the Land of 10,000 Lakes. From 6AM to 6PM, you’ll hear from artists like Hüsker Dü, Brother Ali, Poliça, and The Jayhawks, leading up to a four-hour extravaganza on The Afternoon Show with DJ Kevin Cole, former Minnesotan.

Kevin will be playing everything from undiscovered gems to old favorites: profiling famous Minnesotan Bob Dylan (born in Hibbing, MN); honoring the birthday boy himself, Prince; playing new tracks from the recently-reunited late-70s punk band The Suicide Commandos, and so much more.

You’ll hear exclusive interviews with:

  • Alan Sparhawk of Low
  • Scott MacDonald of Arcwelder
  • Peter Jesperson, founder of Twin/Tone Records
and former manager for The Replacements
  • Tom Hazelmyer, founder of Amphetamine Reptile Records
  • Mary Lucia, DJ at Minneapolis non-profit station The Current
  • Jim Walsh, author of The Replacements: All Over but the Shouting
  • He’ll also be joined on the air by KEXP’s DJ Abbie, former Music Director at Radio K (KUOM), student-run station for the University of Minnesota.
