In October, KEXP once again returned to New York City to broadcast live during the 2013 CMJ Music Marathon. This year, we set up at Judson Memorial Church to showcase 12 bands over 3 days, including Eleanor Friedberger, The Dismemberment Plan, HAERTS, Weekend and many others, plus DJ sets from John Richards and Cheryl Waters in between bands. Gathered here are links to photos, reviews and videos for each session.

Band PhotoWhat a way to wake up the neighborhood! Kicking off KEXP’s 2013 CMJ broadcast was New York’s own Bear Ceuse, a band whose pounding drums, searing guitars, and loud, belted vocals definitely woke up the group of caffeinated New Yorkers who gathered at Judson Memorial Church for their morning session. Their guitarist/vocalist… (read more / view photos / listen to audio)

With a sound as sunny as their hometown of Brisbane, Australia, Cub Sport shone on stage from our CMJ broadcast this morning. After a certain organization asked the band to change their name (can you guess who?), the newly-monikered quintet hit the road for their first-ever US tour, including their American radio debut… (read more / view photos / listen to audio)

Band Photo Brooklyn-based (formerly San Francisco) shoegaze band Weekend came into the picture at the turn of the decade with Sports, a strong introductory statement that could have seen the band go in plenty of different directions in the future. But in the form of Jinx, their sophomore step mixes dense texturing and noisy guitars with… (read more / view photos / listen to audio)

< After 17 years of existence, The Helio Sequence could easily kick back in comfort as a fixture in the Pacific Northwest music scene with their successful signature indie-rock sound. Instead, the duo has been ushered into a new, full-grown style on their fifth full-length album, 2012′s Negotiations, by the heavy rain infamous in their hometown of Portland… (read more / view photos / listen to audio)

Band Photo It’s only a matter of time before Saint Rich, the musical brainchild of Steve Marion and Christian Peslak, becomes a household name. Beyond the Drone, their debut full-length album, was released earlier this month on Merge Records, and it’ll blow you away. Before becoming a part of Saint Rich, Marion had been performing solo… (read more / view photos / listen to audio)

At today’s CMJ session, dance-pop band Wild Cub brought their own baby cub: frontman Keegan DeWitt’s 4 1/2-month old baby was in the audience, watching his papa bear in concert for the very first time. A former NY-based composer, now living in Tennessee, DeWitt worked on the soundtrack for the film Dance Party USA, named… (read more / view photos / listen to audio)

Band Photo In one of the best moments of our CMJ broadcast so far, a teenaged boy showed up at the Au Revoir Simone session holding a handmade sign: “I’ll Stay Awake for You,” a play on the lyrics for their single “Somebody Who.” It’s true — their sound may be dreamy, but the charming all-girl trio will… (read more / view photos / listen to audio)

It’s pretty perfect that the frontman of Ski Lodge shares a surname with the guitarist for The Smiths since their sound is totally reminiscent of those Manchester legends. Andrew Marr, the singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist acting as the creative glue binding the New York band together, thrives on dichotomies. Ski Lodge’s debut album, Big Heart, delves… (read more / view photos / listen to audio)

Band Photo On our final day broadcasting from Judson Memorial Church, it was local band HAERTS who transformed the venue back into a place of worship. “This is a song that we don’t get to do very often, but we thought it fit a church,” noted vocalist Nini Fabi before launching into a passionate rendition of… (read more / view photos / listen to audio)

Standing on the marble altar, and beneath the stained glass windows, Eleanor Friedberger quipped to the audience, “The only thing better than playing at noon, is playing at noon in a church.” If we may add, the only thing better than that is having it be the melodic pop stylings of Ms. Friedberger herself… (read more / view photos / listen to audio)

Band PhotoIt’s never in any band’s plan to break up, but it’s much less anticipated for a band to reemerge as a more mature version of their past selves. But to everyone’s surprise — even their own — The Dismemberment Plan are back with a new record, Uncanney Valley, that not only recognizes that they’ve grown older… (read more / view photos / listen to audio)

For a group that’s only been together for three years, Ghost Wave has certainly made a splash on the worldwide music scene. They recorded their debut full album and first US release, Ages, in six short days and released it via Flying Nun this summer. This five-piece band from New Zealand describe themselves as being “somewhere between the Flying Nun bands of the 80s, the British explosion of the 1960s… (read more / view photos / listen to audio)
