Streaming Archive FAQ

Our new streaming archive is here. Hopefully any questions you have are answered below. If not, please contact us.
Also, let us know any feedback you might have.

How do I use the new streaming archive?
Just choose how you want to browse the archive, By Time, By Host or By Show, then click the show you want to hear, then Launch Player. That’s it.
Optionally you can change the stream quality for those on slower networks or if you’d like a higher quality stream.

What browsers are supported?
IE 8+ and all current versions of Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari and Opera. iOS 6+ and Android 2.3+ are supported as well.

Why can I only see the last 14 days?
Due to our licensing agreement, we are only allowed to stream the most recent 14 days of our broadcast. This agreement also specifies that we don’t allow seeking or moving around directly within the archive as well.

What will happen to the old windows media and real archives?
You can still reach them here, but they will be going away soon as the University of Washington is retiring the infrastructure that supports them. They served us quite well for quite a while, and we will miss them. A little.

*Special note for University of Washington listeners running Microsoft Windows (or any Windows listener using the Sophos antivirus program)
Many Windows users at the UW are using Sophos antivirus, which is known to cause playback issues with our player in certain browsers. You’ll know if you’re affected if, after you start the player, you don’t hear any sound for about 1 minute and 40 seconds.
Browsers that are known to be affected include Internet Explorer 8 and 9, and Safari.
Chrome and Firefox are generally unaffected.

The uncompressed archive was a very unique and “music matters” component of the archive, it is a shame there isn’t an uncompressed option with the new interface.

    Hey guys,
I listen to the streaming archive a lot and see the new upgrades.
I seem to have the stream cut out, about every 10-20 seconds and then go silent for 10 more seconds only to come back on again.
I have tried this on all speeds Low, Med/ High, same result.

I am currently using safari on my home computer.

I will try things again this weekend.

Let me know if you have any advise for such an issue.

Thanks so much, you guys Rock !

I am having the same issue as Jeffro. Trying to use it on my home computer with high speed internet and cuts out periodically, no matter the show or the speed.

Finally working on IPad after 5 or 6 attempts. Intro ads and donation request kept looping after about 10 seconds of music from archived morning show.

New beta streaming archive plays the first :30 or so of a show, then loops back to the beginning of the show. It’s been like this for some time. I’m using iPad, Safari, new beta streamer.

I had the same issue using mac mini and safari. Downloaded Chrome and all is well and good again. Safari is listed as compatible but I am running older version of MacOS(10.6.8) and version 5 of Safari on my 2009 Mac Mini. Not a big Safari fan so I won’t look into upgrading now that Chrome works with new player. Hope this helps.

Really disappointed to see the old archives and the higher resolution options go. MP3′s suck! The music world is suffering from poor audio quality and this is a step in the wrong direction.

In addition the new version cuts out on a periodic and frequent basis. I don’t have the same problem running (Mac) the old archive or live shows.

Hope you can address this, you’ve been a sonic lifeline to those of us in the hinterlands!

    will

I’ve been patient hoping the bugs would be worked out but I’m not happy with the new streaming archive implementation.

One thing that was important to me that doesn’t seem to be available in the new system is to be able to start listening anywhere in the program. I might listen to a three hour show over the period of a few days, starting the next day at the time I left off from the previous day. I might have a few minutes of overlap but, at least, for example, I don’t have to start the stream an hour earlier than I plan to listen if I want to pick it up at the second hour.

Another is the periodic glitch that others have reported. I hear it every time a new entry pops up in the real time play list. I thought it might be a result of my relatively low speed connection, but I hear the same thing even at the lowest streaming bit rate. I’m glad that doesn’t fix the problem because the quality is bad enough that I don’t want to listen like that. I”m pretty tolerant, but that’s the kind of sound that gave the MP3 format a bad rap.

As an East Coast listener, much of the music programming unique to KEXP comes on too late for me to listen in real time. I came to depend on the archive and I can no longer do so.

This is progress that we didn’t really need. The only improvement I can see is the real time play list, but if that’s causing a problem, I’d be happy to go back to getting play lists by e-mail.

As others have noted, it’s very disappointing to lose the option for uncompressed audio. Please consider adding it to the new archive. Positive Vibrations, the best reggae program in the world, deserves to be heard in pristine sound quality. Thank you!

I can’t believe you released this player. It still clips out after 20 seconds. I’ve got Lion, Safari and Mac Mini. Bummer I can’t listen or DONATE anymore!!

Why does the audio come thru when I listen to the station live but when I pick a show from the archive, I get no audio when the player launches?? So many people are complaining about no audio but you still haven’t fixed it. It’s just maddening. Is there some firewall issue with the archive that’s not there with the live stream? I’m at work, high-speed connection. Using Chrome. The old format for archived shows works great. This new player is pointless.

I also wish there was the ability to navigate anywhere within the audio--

I did like the old streaming archive better, but am really grateful that you offer it!

Love “Mind over Matters”-- excellent programming-- thank you!

The new streaming archive does not work at all for me. After a few seconds a message pops up that says that the script stopped loading and everythign freezes. I tried firefox, google chrome etc.

mp3 is crap. And a dishonoring of the late Michael C. Wellings, father of the uncompressed audio stream. Shame!

The streaming archive works only intermittently. It will play for a while, and stop for now apparent reason. Right now, it appears to be playing something, but there is no sound.

I’ve pretty much given up on this, which is unfortunate because I enjoyed listening to prior shows while at work.
