Join us March 14th through the 16th as KEXP broadcasts live once again from Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop in Austin, TX, during the 2012 South by Southwest Music Conference.

Artists performing exclusive live sets include Of Monsters and Men, Shearwater, Allen Stone, Pickwick, The Wedding Present, Choir of Young Believers, and many others, while KEXP DJs Cheryl Waters and Kevin Cole spin music between sets.

Wednesday, March 14, 2012 Performances (Austin time)

11:30pm – Howler: Minneapolis rockers Howler first caught the attention of a Rough Trade executive in 2011, when shortly after hearing a demo he hopped on a plane to Minnesota and promptly signed the band to the UK label. Later in the year, they released their debut EP, This One’s DifferentRead more

1:30pm – The Barr Brothers: The Barr Brothers first caught the attention of KEXP when they opened for Deer Tick at The Tractor Tavern last November. The performance was so incredible that we invited them to play an in-studio session the very next morning, which you can watch here. Originally from Montreal, The Barr Brothers released their self-titled debut album… Read more

3:30pm – Wussy: Cincinnati band Wussy was formed by Lisa Walker and former Ass Ponys member Chuck Cleaver in 2001. Led by the vocals of both Walker and Cleaver, Wussy embody the droning, reverberating sound typical to Midwestern indie rock, while at the same time harkening back to Cleaver’s days in the Ass Ponys… Read more

5:30pm – Allen Stone: It’s getting to the point where Allen Stone no longer needs an introduction. No longer an up-and-comer, the Seattle soul phenom’s appeal has spread well beyond the Northwest, and it’s no longer a secret how amazing his live performances can be. With the help of a performance on Conan O’Brien, he has gained a good deal of national buzz… Read more

7:30pm – Of Monsters and Men: We’ve been waiting for this for almost two years for Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men to make it Stateside and perform for KEXP listeners outside of their native country. Back in 2010, we captured an incredible, intimate, unrepeatable live acoustic session with the band in their Reykjavik apartment during Iceland Airwaves. Now, with a serious record deal in the U.S. and fans clamoring… Read more

Thursday, March 15, 2012 Performances (Austin time)

11:30pm – Imperial Teen: At this point, Imperial Teen should be a household name. They’ve been carving out a name for themselves in the indie rock scene since the mid-1990s and have opened up for Hole and Marilyn Manson. Their mix of post-grunge alternative and new wave earned them SPIN’s 4th best album of the year with 1996’s SeasickRead more
(view photos / watch video / listen to session)
1:30pm – The Wedding Present: Formed in 1985 in Leeds, UK, The Wedding Present have undergone many incarnations in their near 30-year career. Founder, frontman, and creative force David Gedge has been the group’s only consistent member, with several musicians coming and going over the years to suit whichever direction Gedge wanted to take the project. He stopped releasing… Read more

3:30pm – Choir of Young Believers: Danish ensemble Choir of Young Believers are known for their angelic pop melodies, frontman Jannis Noya Makrigiannis’s crystalline vocals, and their use of airy synths and effects to complement spot-on traditional instrumentation, giving their music a lightweight, ethereal quality. Formed in 2006, the collective released their debut album… Read more

5:30pm – Nada Surf: Listening to Nada Surf‘s most recent release, The Stars Are Indifferent To Astronomy, it’s hard to believe it was recorded by a band that has released seven studio albums over the course of a 16 year-career dating back to their 1996 debut High/Lo. Caws, Lorca, and Elliott seem as they’re almost getting younger with age… Read more
(view photos / watch video / listen to session)
7:30pm – Shearwater: Austin band Shearwater have made some big changes this year, but none of them seem to be hindering Jonathan Meiburg’s energy. They switched labels and switched producers. They are no longer writing within the “trilogy” story arc of Palo Santo, Rook, and The Golden Archipelago. Meiburg has even stated that their live presence will be quite different… Read more

Friday, March 16, 2012 Performances (Austin time)

11:30pm – Pickwick: Along with Allen Stone, Pickwick has served as the face of the recent Seattle soul revival, and like Allen Stone, Pickwick revolves around the amazing voice, energy, and stage presence of their leading man. Galen Disston and company first appeared on KEXP last summer by way of the song “Hacienda Motel” from their debut… Read more

1:30pm – The War on Drugs: Philadelphia band The War on Drugs was formed in 2005 by Adam Granduciel and Kurt Vile. Vile, of course, has pursued a successful solo career, but The War On Drugs have continued churning out soulful, road-weary Americana, led by Granduciel moaning vocals, a spot-on rhythm section, and delicate, organic guitar lines. 2011′s acclaimed Slave AmbientRead more

3:30pm – JD McPherson: Rounder Records has picked up the throwback rock/rhythm and blues record Signs and Signifiers by JD McPherson, which they will release on April 17. The record has been floating around since October of 2010, and McPherson has slowly been garnering YouTube fame and acclaim from independent radio across the nation… Read more

5:30pm – The Men: Doesn’t anybody ever wonder where all the umph went in indie rock? Sure, we get the occasional outlier like Sleigh Bells or Fucked Up that isn’t afraid to shred its way to your heart. But even then, where did all the reckless abandonment of production and disregard for “the system” go? If you have asked… Read more

7:30pm – You Won’t: Boston band You Won’t have a sense of humor. The cover of their forthcoming debut full-length album features a beat-up, heavily-bandaged mime, and their press photos might be better suited for an improv troupe (their video for their single “Three Car Garage” is also good for a laugh). Musically, the duo, which consists of guitarist/vocalist… Read more

Is the Of Monsters and Men show badge only? Or is it open to everyone? A possible free show?

Thanks so much! I’ll be taking off work if it is!

HELP! I’ve got Pickwick and JD McPherson down on my schedule to play at Mellow Johnny’s on Friday. HOWEVER, the times (and whether they are playing at all) are questionable since the Mellow Johnny’s site info and yours are different. Please advise!
    Thanks! Sherry

Sherry, we both have the same times on these pages:

Pickwick will be at 11:30AM Austin time and JD at 3:30. Get there early as space is limited!
