Live Review: Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks with Speedy Ortiz at the Neptune Theatre, 4/12/14

So, here’s the thing: I love the ’90s. I really do. Like, I score really, really high at those Buzzfeed “How ’90s Are You” quizzes. It’s my favorite era of music. So, I was pretty stoked for this show, pairing a ’90s-influenced band with the King of the ’90s, Mr. Malkmus.

Members of Russian punk group Pussy Riot will be released from jail soon under a new amnesty bill, which pardons mothers who have not committed violent crimes. Band members Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina are currently in prison camps, while Yekaterina Samutsevich was released last year. [Pitchfork]

Monday News Roundup

Soul singer Mavis Staples recently appeared at this year’s Pickathon, but her star power continues to impress, this time bringing a guest onstage in Arcade Fire‘s Win Butler, for San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival. Butler joined Staples’ band on guitar and backing vocals for a rendition of “The Weight.” Watch video from the concert below:
