Review Revue: The Accüsed - Grinning Like an Undertaker

Sometimes I really wish I could jump in a time machine and visit the Seattle of yesteryear. Not because the traffic was better, and there were fewer condos, and people argued on album covers instead of the Internet, but because I really wish I could witness firsthand the version of this city - and the version of our hallowed uber-indie Sub Pop - that supported the "splattercore"-peddling, zombie-infused, thrashing likes of bands like The Accüsed. (OK, I'm guessing there weren't "bands like the Accüsed," there was just the Accüsed, but still!) A band that not only had their own highly dialed in aesthetic and mythology, but that had a vigilante female zombie mascot named Martha! They really don't make 'em like that anymore, do they?

It seems the KCMU crowd was pretty much on board with these guys by the this album, their first on Sub Pop, was released, a decade into the band's existence. Despite some unfortunate language, it's nice to see the enthusiasm for their unique sonic stylings.

"Quack"

"Accüsed are the best in their field."

"This should be in M. Very heavy [then shouldn't it be in H?] but polished sound very popular among some sects"

"Agreed! This pup rocks in a big way...

"What's wrong - you pussys [sic] can't take it?!" [Not sure what this is in response to. Perhaps to not having been ranked high enough in rotation?

"Good speedcore/thrash metal. I liked the rap & metal of 'Down & Out.' Nothing else really seemed to set it apart from other bands in this genre. Good effort."

There's not a lot of information out there about Gibson Bros. (not to be confused with The Gibson Brothers), but they seem to have been purveyors of the low-fi psycho-bluesy-rockabilly-ish sound that college radio stations saw a fair amount of in the '80s and early '90s. A quick YouTube survey of s…

Song Premiere: David Bazan - Teardrops

Most bands start by writing songs at home and recording in their basements. For David Bazan, it took nearly two decades to get there. The former Pedro the Lion bandleader and subsequent solo artist has long been a local treasure, appealing to a generation of Northwest indie kids in the 90s and 2000…

Review Revue: Alice Donut - Mule

The KCMU reaction to this 1990 album by New York punks Alice Donut is, as often happens in college-radio-land, quite varied, from "their best yet" to "a step back." For what it's worth, the historical record, as far as my quick survey has revealed, seems to lean toward the opinion that Mule, the ba…
