Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription.  This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unrealeased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear.  Today’s song, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Overboard” by Lo Tom from their forthcoming self-titled album, due July 14th on Barsuk Records.

Lo Tom - Overboard (MP3)David Bazan, Jason Martin, Trey Many, and TW Walsh: if those names are familiar to you, and if they bring to mind warm feelings of musical glory, than you'll rejoice to hear that they've recorded an album together. Their previous and current bands - Pedro the Lion, Starflyer 59, and Velour100 - are from, directly connected to, and performed regularly in the Pacific Northwest, and particularly Seattle's all-ages music culture, in the late-90’s and early-00’s. (The contributions of these four friends is wonderfully traced in this geneology.) Their new, collective project is called Lo Tom and they've given us a first taste of their creation with "Overboard".

Given the sounds they are each known for range from shoegaze to dream-pop to indie rock, it's hard to know if all the songs on the record will be in one vein or if they'll merge styles of their past together, but “Overboard” is pure melodic, melancholy guitar-pop. We already know that these people can craft a song and this is a wonderful taste of what the four can do together. We have much to look forward to with the full release!

Lo Tom will be performing with TW Walsh's solo project in Seattle at The Tractor Tavern on Saturday, August 19th. Find out more on their website and Facebook page. In the meantime, enjoy “Overboard” as we await their self-titled debut on Barsuk Records on July 14th.
