KEXP at POP Montreal 2017

It all began three years ago at an Operators show. KEXP friend Dan Boeckner (Operators, Wolf Parade, Divine Fits, Handsome Furs) had a conversation with us about how we had to get up to Montreal, knowing how much KEXP regularly champions bands from Canada. He introduced KEXP to producer James Benjamin of Breakglass Studios, who over the next couple of years worked hard to find a way for us to come up, collaborate, and capture exclusive sessions amid Montreal’s vibrant music scene. It all worked out this year, as we include in our partnership the POP Montreal International music Festival in Quebec, Canada. This week, on September 13 through 16, we are looking forward to digging even deeper into Montreal’s music scene to bring back the best new bands for you to discover and to catch the latest from bands we already know and love.

For those of you not already familiar with POP Montreal, they started in 2002, bringing a mix of headliners from North America and Europe to combine with the best new artists coming out of Canada. Past headliners have included The Arcade Fire, Beck, Patti Smith, Burt Bacharach and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, among too many others to list. This year’s headliners include Austra, RZA, Hurray For The Riff Raff, Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall. Throughout the week, the KEXP crew will be filming exclusive sessions with bands from the lineup live in front of an intimate studio audience at the legendary Breakglass Studio, where bands like Wolf Parade, Purity Ring, The Besnard Lakes, and Stars have recorded their albums.

A few of the bands we’re excited to feature include Moon King, the dreamy electro project of Daniel Woodhead who has toured with the likes of Alvvays, Austra, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra; Woolworm, out of Vancouver, who just released their new record, Deserve To Die, and have a poppy dark-rock vibe that we’re looking forward to hearing live; Montreal natives The Luyas, featuring members of Miracle Fortress and Bell Orchestre, who’ve been creating interesting multi-layered indie rock since 2006 and will hopefully bring along the french horn for their performance; and Faith Healer from Edmonton, Alberta, who just released their new album, Try ;-), already in KEXP’s rotation. Plus, we’ll get to hang out with our old friends The Besnard Lakes, and Dan Boeckner himself is sure to be around.

For all that happens along the way, we’ll be sure to bring you updates on Instagram and Twitter, so don’t forget to follow along, and keep checking here on the KEXP Blog for daily recaps and photos.
