Thursday Music News

  • A student at Virginia Tech has to be giving credit for creating on of the most random news stories to surface in a while. This student sent an amusing and confusing email to local label Sub Pop, urging Nirvana to reunite and record a school-spirited video for Virginia Tech’s homecoming. To fully understand just how hilarious this is, you have to read the original email here. Regardless, “Nirvana” really pulled through. Check out their inspiring message below. Go Hoagies!

    • It’s been three years since Peter Gabriel released his record Scratch My Back, which consisted of his covers of songs by Bon Iver, David Bowie, Arcade Fire, and many more. There was hope that those he covered would return the favor, no one was holding their breath. Until now! Gabriel will get the coverage (ha!) he deserves, because almost everyone he covered on Scratch My Back, except Bowie and Radiohead, has agreed to contribute to the upcoming compilation And I’ll Scratch Yours (out September 23). Check out Bon Iver’s cover of Gabriel’s “Come Talk To Me” below. [Stereogum]
    • Volcano Choir, the music collaboration of Bon Iver frontman Justin Vernon and the band Collections of Colonies of Bees, are set to release their second studio album, Repave, this September. Today they’ve shared the music video for “Byegone,” which will be featured on the record. The video is so simple that it only depicts florescent lights being strung up on a tree. Take a look. • Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros performed on Late Show with David Letterman last night to promote their recently released, self-titled album. “Life is Hard” is a multifaceted song that sounds fantastic live. Sometimes when bands show up on late night shows they can give throw away performances, but this one is pretty unforgettable. [CoS]
