Song of the Day: Magic Mouth – Swampy Seconds

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Swampy Seconds” by Magic Mouth from their 2013 self-released album, Devil May Care.

Magic Mouth – Swampy Seconds (MP3)

Sometimes you wake up in the morning, groggy, in need of a cup of coffee. Sometimes there is no coffee to be had – the machine is broken, or you never ended up buying the Folders, or maybe the local coffee shop is closed. If this is the case, do not fret: instead, put on a couple songs by Magic Mouth. You’ll wake right up! The Portland, OR, band is energetic, positive-focused and live with that phunk! The band, in fact, brings to mind the British group, The Heavy, one of KEXP’s favorites!

Magic Mouth’s song “Swampy Seconds” opens your half-awake eyes right up. The four-piece, which recently released their second EP, has a way with fast-paced music complete with shaking snares, booty-moving bass and dancing electric guitar. What hits you first, however, is the large-and-in-charge vocals, “AIN’T ‘YA GOT NO SHAME?!” screams the opening of “Swampy Seconds”. It’s a double shot of energy and enough to get your heart-rate up to face the day – whatever is on your to-do list. The song is so good you want to play it loud so that the windows rattle and shake with the prominent lyrics.

Magic Mouth will is playing tonight in Portland at White Owl Social Club and will be live on KEXP in March 8 at 1PM, right before they head down to Austin, TX, for SXSW. Get more information on the band at their website and Facebook page. In the meantime, check out their live video for “Swampy Seconds” here:
