Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Secret Message” by Seattle band Wimps from the 2014 Party At The Wrong Time EP on Help Yourself Records.
Seattle’s Punk Rock darlings, Wimps, get to the point. Frills are not in this trio’s desired arsenal. What is, however, is powerful music that pushes the listener with a combination of humor, attitude and a flare for the musical-dramatic. With a certain style of minimal instrumentation and vocals that almost come across as comic strips from the weekly paper, the group doesn’t shy away from any subject matter, though they may paint a picture of themselves as jokesters.
Today’s song of the day embodies this idea. With vocal harmonies bookending Rachel Ratner’s lyrics about secret messages and the listener’s ability to comprehend, the song pushes on like a cheap car in the sunlight headed quick down the grey highway. You can imagine cigarette butts flying out the window – or human butts pressed against the glass! The tune is fun, thoughtful and worth the many plays it will get on your stereo.
Wimps will be playing today (March 14th) at Waid’s with Sad Horse (PDX), Gang Cult and Snuff Redux. The group will also be playing May 31st at Java Jive. For more information, visit their Facebook page. In the mean time, check out their video for “Stop Having Fun” live on KEXP here:
