In sad news, drummer Scott Asheton, a.k.a. "Rock Action" Asheton, of The Stooges passed away over the weekend at the age of 64. Along with his brother, guitarist Ron Asheton, he helped form the influential punk band in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1967. In a statement on the band's Facebook page, frontman Iggy Pop said: "My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night. Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother. He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Ashetons have always been and continue to be a second family to me. My thoughts are with his sister Kathy, his wife Liz and his daughter Leanna, who was the light of his life." [Pitchfork]

In other sad news, Gary Burger, frontman for The Monks, has passed away from pancreatic cancer at the age of 72. The pioneering garage rock band was formed by five Army men while stationed in Germany in 1964. Under the "Monks" moniker, they donned black robes, with ropes tied around the neck, and the tonsure haircut. In 2009, local label Light in the Attic reissued the band's 1966 debut Black Monk Time. Late last week, Tad Doyle (better known simply as TAD) remastered and uploaded the 2001 album Kung-Fu Cocktail Grip from the band Hog Molly, his project with fellow local legend Jack Endino.
