Monday Music News

  • Black Keys band member Patrick Carney played the title track for the duo’s new album, Turn Blue, today. This is the second song, along with “Fever”, to be released from the new record. The bluesy tune features rumbling drums and a thoughtful lyrical tone. The new record is also a collaboration between the Black Keys and Danger Mouse, the second LP collaboration between the two musical giants. Check “Turn Blue” out here [Stereogum]:

  • Congratulations to Sasquatch! for selling out all passes for Memorial Day weekend! Hopefully, you got your tickets. Look to the KEXP Blog for updates and festival coverage.
  • Atmosphere released a video for his song “Kanye West”, featuring a heisting duo and a cameo from Slug himself. The gun-heavy piece, which is also a tad farcical, ends with the Bonnie and Clyde pair speeding off with a new red dress! [Pitchfork]

  • Thee Oh Sees will release their new album, Drop, on Record Store Day, April 19th. The record, coming out on frontman John Dwyer’s Castle Face label, is on the heels of their 2013 release, Floating Coffin. You can stream it on Pitchfork here.
  • Sigur Rós released a cover of “The Rains of Castamere” for the upcoming Game of Thrones soundtrack, an eerie, melancholy song perfect for a dank castle or when you’re worried a dragon may be out to get ya! Check out the song here [Pitchfork]:

  • There are lots of fun cameos and pairings of musicians at Coachella. This year, we thought we’d just list a few: Beyonce with Solange. Pharrell with Snoop, Busta and Gwen StefaniNas with Jay-Z and Diddy. And Outkast with Janelle Monáe. You can read all about them on Pitchfork’s news scroll.
  • A video for the Pharrell-produced Alicia Keys song “It’s On Again” (featuring Kendrick Lamar) was released today. The song (for the latest Spiderman movie) has the 2014-signature Pharrell sound: depth in the strings and bass with funky, dancey snares and falsettos. Check out the video here [Stereogum]:

  • At Nirvana’s Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction last week, the remaining members of the band were joined by some talented female frontwomen: LordeSt VincentJoan Jett, and Kim Gordon. This prompted Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic to say that the ladies’ performances “conjured the spirit of the band”. Novoselic wrote in a blog post, “I feel we conjured the spirit of the band, and we could not have done that alone.” [NME]
