Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Young And Alive” by Beach Slang from the 2015 album The Things We Do To Find People Who Feel Like Us on Polyvinyl.

It’s easy to say Beach Slang are “totally rad.” The Philadelphia-based band just released their debut full-length, titled The Things We Do to Find People Who Feel Like Us. For frontman James Alex, he found his people by releasing catchy, anthemic-rock inspired by his Minneapolis faves: The Replacements and Hüsker Dü.

“Rock’n’roll is so stupidly important to me,” Alex said, in an interview with Spin Magazine. “It changed my life, it saved my life, it did all of the things that people write about in books and movies. I want to be a part of making sure this thing hangs around in a way that isn’t embarrassing. I’m hoping we’re at least a part of that movement.” Today’s Song of the Day captures that unabashed enthusiasm with its adamant chorus of “We are young and alive” repeated over ’90s-esque alt-rock guitars and pounding drums.

Beach Slang just performed in Seattle earlier this week, but play tonight at The Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco, CA with Worriers. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter, and check out today’s Song of the Day below:
