Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Silver Velvet” by Vancouver trio The Courtneys, from their 2017 album, The Courtneys II, on Flying Nun Records.
Sonically out of New Zealand but actually out of Vancouver, Northwest trio The Courtneys play fuzzy power pop to make their predecessors proud. It’s not small thing that legendary Flying Nun Records chose to release their sophomore LP, and the band delivers with a ’90s-steeped sound, full of buzzing guitars, driving rhythms, soaring vocals and buoyant pop hooks. Today’s featured song, “Silver Velvet”, the album’s opener, wraps blissful girl group inspired lyrics, the sitting-here-alone-thinking-of-you kind, in swaths of gauzy shoegaze, the perfect combo of gray skies and sunny thoughts. In other words, so Northwest.
The Courtneys will return to the Northwest next month, with a stop in Seattle at The Crocodile on April 12th. You’ll also be able to hear them live on KEXP on Saturday, April 15th, at 6:30PM. Find other tour dates and more music on their Facebook and Bandcamp pages. For now, check out the official video for “Silver Velvet”:
