Song of the Day: Cloud Control – Rainbow City

Cloud Control

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Morning Show with John Richards, is “Rainbow City” by Cloud Control from a 2017 single out now on Votiv Music.

Cloud Control – Rainbow City (MP3)

Australian indie heroes Cloud Control maintained a radio silence in 2015 when the band parted ways with bassist Jeremy Kelshaw. Since then the band’s movements have been quiet, but 2017 is seeing a wellspring of new material. “Rainbow City” comes out with a gorgeously produced video, a surreal color-fest that meets the expectation of a song about rainbow anything. The song sees riffs float through a gossamer miasma of synths and powerful vocal harmonies. The video sees frontman Alister Wright’s body and Frank Oceanesque fade contorting with the same emotion as his words as he howls “Lost, lost, lost lost.”

Cloud Control played a few Australian dates when the single dropped last month and has another Australian one-off mid-August. So far no one is saying anything about a tour or a larger album release associated with the release of “Rainbow City,” but an album in the same would be welcome, as would a tour. The band has a laundry list of multi-national acts they’ve toured with in the past, indie greats Weezer, Arcade Fire, and Vampire Weekend. Cloud Control is ready to headline. Below, check out the video for “Rainbow City” and keep updated on the band’s movements on their Facebook Page.
