A pretty slow week, but then again, how do you compete with a new Wilco album? That alone should send you to your local music store, but while you’re there, be sure to pick up Moby’s latest, the Bjork DVD, which we reviewed here, and Levon Helm’s second release in two years — it’s the former drummer/vocalist of The Band’s followup to the Grammy Award winning Dirt Farmer. Check out the rest on Largehearted Boy’s list before rushing out the door.

New album by Dinosaur Jr.! Not much more needs to be said about that. It should be on top of everyone’s CD stack this week. Never mind the bad band names on the rest — Lord Cut-Glass, The Phenomenal Handclap Band, Amazing Baby, Spinnerette, Deer Tick, Sunset Rubdown, Pete Yorn (sorry, Pete!) — there’s actually a lot a great music landing in record stores today. Lord Cut-Glass, for instance, is former Delgados frontman Alun Woodward; God Help the Girl is a bunch of songs penned by Stuart Murdoch of Belle and Sebastian and sung by a variety of female vocalists; and you probably already know that Sunset Rubdown is a project of Wolf Parade’s Spencer Krug. Deer Tick’s latest fits right in there with The Godfather, Part 2, and The Empire Strikes Back as one of those sophomore efforts that surpasses an already great original. Tom Brosseau, Foreign Born, The Antlers (remastered), Future of the Left, Patterson Hood, Hockey, Tortoise, and Regina Spektor are other artists of high interest this week. Grab Largeheared Boy’s list as you head out to your local record shop, but not until you’ve checked out these fine tunes:

Barely a week before AthFest, Athen’s Georgia Theatre was destroyed by fire last Friday. The iconic venue was one of the music spots in town and hosted everyone from John Mayer to Drive-By Truckers, R.E.M. to Ghostface Killah. A saddened Wilmot Greene, the owner of the theater who was in the midst of renovations, was quoted to say: “Even if the insurance pays for it and we can rebuild, it’ll never be the same. They don’t build them like that anymore.” The festival will continue on without the historic venue.
All Tomorrow’s Parties has just announced the new festival, 10 Years Of ATP, to celebrate the series’ 10th anniversary, on December 11-13, the weekend after the Nightmare Before Christmas ATP event. Scheduled so far for the event: Explosions In The Sky, Shellac, Tortoise, Melvins, Dirty Three, Fuck Buttons, Deerhoof, and many more. Tickets on sale today.
Jarvis Cocker, Fatboy Slim, The Kooks, The View and others are blue for climate change. As part of a new Oxfam campaign, the Glastonbury performing artists are asking fans attending festivals this year to help raise awareness of global climate change by painting themselves blue. Little Boots, one of the participating artists, says, “Go blue, demand that the Prime Minister takes the lead in protecting the people of this beautiful planet and kiss goodbye to climate change.”
There’s no vindication to be had for the mother of two found liable of copyright infringement back in 2007 and fined $222,000. A second jury thought Jammie Thomas-Rasset should actually pay record companies $1.92 million instead, that’s $80,000 for each of the 24 songs she illegally downloaded via peer-to-peer file sharing… that’s $80,000 for Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.”
Here’s something you can download for free! Noah and The Whale are offering the title track to their upcoming album, The First Days of Spring, “with absolutely no restrictions of access.” Enjoy.
Two very DIY labels are putting together two days of terrific bands in Brooklyn on July 3rd and 4th. The lineup for the Woodsist/Captured Tracks Festival at Broadway Backyard was just announced and features Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls, Blank Dogs, Thee Oh Sees, Woods, caUSE co-MOTION! and Kurt Vile, among others.
New albums are in the works for Kings of Convenience, Islands, and Air. Simian Mobile Disco is due to release their second album, Temporary Pleasure, in August and have just debuted the first video from it: “Audacity of Huge” featuring Chris Keating of Yeasayer:
Jack White continues his quest to usurp James Brown’s title of “hardest working man in show business.” While a White Stripes documentary is in the works, his latest project, The Dead Weather, is about to release their debut album in a few weeks and commence touring (Paramount Theatre on August 20). But that’s not all! He’s also recently opened Third Man Records as a combined store, studio and office space. Third Man will release the new album. The Dead Weather was on the Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien this weekend and performed “Hang You From the Heavens”:

No blockbusters out this week, but there is a little bit of something for everybody to rock out with: there’s Nickodemus and Major Lazer for a bit of groove; for The Builders and the Butchers, Ha Ha Tonka and Rock Plaza Central for some countrified rock; Cassettes Won’t Listen for electro pop; The Legends and Magic Wands for reverb-laden pop; and then, there’s Spinal Tap for something somewhat like epic! A highlight for sure is the second full-length by Tiny Masters of Today — siblings Ivan and Ada, aged 15 and 13 respectively — who wrote, produced and recorded much of the album themselves! Check out the rest on Largehearted Boy’s list, sample a few tracks below, and rock on over to your favorite record store.

The most anticipated album this week for KEXP listeners has to be The Eternal by Sonic Youth, who are headlining the mainstage at the Capitol Hill Block Party. KEXP is proud to sponsor this event especially when the lineup just gets better every year, so get your tickets now! Other notable releases this week come from Dirty Projectors, Deerhunter, Mos Def, Busdriver, Miike Snow (yesterday’s Song of the Day), Kasabian, Placebo, and Rhett Miller (of Old 97’s).We’ve been playing The Features‘ album for a while on KEXP and even had them perform during our broadcast from SXSW, but they’re finally getting a proper release. And Nacional put together a fantastic soundtrack to Rudo y Cursi, a Mexican film about brothers from a small village with big dreams of soccer stardom, featuring Juana Molina, Devendra Banhart, Nortec Collective, The Black Lips, among others, and Gael Garcia Bernal singing a Spanish version of Cheap Trick’s “I Want You to Want Me.” Check it out:
Hombre Lobo, the seventh studio album from Eels, hits stores this week. While each album seems, to fans at least, a momentous event, the album subtitled “12 Songs of Desire,” is part of a prolific body of work from Mark Oliver Everett, including soundtracks, live albums, discs of rarities, live DVDs, an autobiography, and even a documentary about his own life. Other highlights include the latest from old time punkers New York Dolls and Iggy Pop, not quite as old but still pretty well established punkers Rancid, and veteran songwriter Elvis Costello, who’s countrified new album of mostly new songs is produced by T Bone Burnett, an man known to reinvigorate lots of other old timers. Perhaps the most exciting release for the grayhaired rockers and newer fans alike, though, is the first volume of the Neil Young Archives available in a variety of forms: 8 audio discs, 10 DVDs, or 10 Blu Ray discs, ranging from $100-$300. Notable posthumous releases are available from J Dilla and Jeff Buckley, whose masterwork Grace is reconstructed through live recordings from around the world. Also, out this week is Lee Fields‘ My World, from Stones Throw imprint Truthe & Soul. Fields, who has been “rediscovered” several times since he started recording funk records in the 70’s, is due for another fresh look from funk, blues, soul, and hip hop fans alike. Newer to the scene but well worth checking out are the new albums from Brasstronaut, Deastro and So Many Dynamos.
