Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on The Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Every Morning” by J Mascis from the 2014 album Tied To A Star out August 26th on Sub Pop Records.
Everyone knows that Dinosaur Jr. can shred with ferocious volume, as anyone who saw them at our 2009 Concerts at the Mural or our 2012 MusicFestNW broadcast can attest. But, lately, frontman J Mascis has been showing a softer side with his solo albums. On August 26th, Sub Pop Records will release the sophomore solo album from this longtime alt-rock icon titled Tied to a Star.
Much like his debut, 2011’s Several Shades of Why, the new album boasts a strong supporting cast, including Pall Jenkins (Black Heart Procession), Mark Mulcahy (Miracle Legion), and Chan Marshall (Cat Power). An exciting edition to the line-up is musician Ken Maiuri, who has not only toured with Mulcahy and Pedro The Lion, but also accompanies the New England senior citizens choir, Young@Heart Chorus.
And much like his debut, Tied to a Star features Mascis turning down the amps from eleven, and showcasing his exquisite songwriting. On today’s Song of the Day, his languid rasp of a singing voice stands out a jangly guitar riff. And sure, there’s one of those trademark Mascis squalls of a guitar solo midway, but the track still has a more laid-back feel then you might find on a Dinosaur album.
Hear a live KEXP in-studio session from J Mascis on Friday, August 29th at 9:00 AM PST from The Cutting Room Studios in New York City. You can also catch him live in Seattle on Wednesday, November 19th at the Tractor Tavern. His management tweets for him here and posts on Facebook, too.
