The Jesus and Mary Chain

  • As we reported last month, Scottish siblings The Jesus & Mary Chain are releasing their first new album in eighteen years, Damage and Joy, out March 24th via ADA/Warner Music. (The album title is apparently “a reference to the English translation of schadenfreude.” Interpret that as you will!) Today we have the first track, “Amputation” — which debuted on Steve Lamacq’s BBC Radio 6 show, and can now be streamed below. The once estranged brothers Reid have patched things up, with younger sibling Jim reporting, “In the last couple of years, we’ve buried the hatchet to some degree, and thankfully not into each other.” The album also features the band’s touring drummer Brian Young and former Lush bassist Phil King. Jim adds, “The interesting thing about this record is what comes out of the speakers. To make a good record is an achievement if you’re twenty-two, but to do it in your fifties, the way we are, I think is a minor miracle.” [Pitchfork]

  • Yesterday, we shared news of a forthcoming LP from troubled troubadour Ryan Adams, shared via a web show hosted by celebri-cat Lil’ BUB. If you’d like to hear a new song without Bub’s distinctive meowing over it, stream the single “Do You Still Love Me?” below. The new album, Prisoner, hits stores February 17th release via Pax Am/Blue Note/Capitol. It’ll be Adams’ first new album since last year’s Taylor Swift covers LP, and his first album of original songs since his 2014 self-titled album. [Under the Radar]

  • If you liked Adams covering Swift, you’ll love Jack White‘s acoustic rendition of the Danger Mouse track “The Rose With The Broken Neck” below, a song he collaborated on lyrically. The original version can be found in its spaghetti western-inspired trip-hop-ish state on the 2011 album Rome, a collaboration between Mouse and Italian composer Daniele Luppi. White tells the story of how he came to be involved below, before kicking into this live performance, filmed at the Pink Garter Theatre in Jackson, WY. You can find White’s version on his most recent release, Jack White Acoustic Recordings 1998 – 2016, out now on Third Man Records. [Spin]

  • Hot on the heels of a Grammy nomination for “Best Rap Album,” hip hop veterans De La Soul share a video for the track “Memory Of… (Us)” which features special guests, Estelle and Pete Rock, both on the song and the clip. Watch below. Their new album And The Anonymous Nobody is out now via A.O.I. Records. [Stereogum]
